Dell desktops have been legendary to me.

As for laptops, I've only tried Gateway & Acer, Toshiba, and Apple.

Just seen Dell.com has 12 days of deals on now. It ends in about 9 hours, but maybe you'll be able to find a laptop on sale.

I'd go with Asus. Their laptop business machines are built durable and haven't had any issues other than some fan noise which was an easy fix. The case itself is very strong. Everything else is just standard hardware.

I have worked on laptop for a long time (mostly Dell, then Lenovo) and that made me appreciate few things: battery life, screen, weight.

Never, ever, ever purchase a heavy laptop if you plan on travelling.
Screen has to be awesome.
Power plug is not there when you need one.

I like dell a lot, but they got lazy, and there are some new kids on the block. Personal
favorite atm is: ASUS Zenbook Prime UX31A-DB51

Screen: IPS full HD, yeah baby
Battery life: plenty (5h)
Weight: 2.86 pounds, divide by two for kilos

It can be configured with extra ram, usually comes with ssd etc.

There is no need to purchase expensive and fast cpu, since there is a 99.5% chance you won't use it (trust me on that one),
and unless you go for Alienware-like GPU choice, you will not be able to play games in satisfying quality at all.

Lenovo is the best we have more than 10 Lenovo laptops and all performed great, so Lenovo is the best.

I've got usb coolers by Cooler Master for all three laptops, cost less than $10 each, actually free after rebate. Hoping to extend their life by less exposure to heat.
