Hey guys,

I am getting a laptop tomorrow. The configuration I am looking for are:

3rd gen i7
500 GB HDD
8 GB Ram
1GB Video GFX Card

I will be traveling a lot so durability is top priority. I plan on using it rough.. I mean let it run almost 15hours a day and at at times 24x7 too.

I was thinking of Dell Inspiron 15R or Lenovo Thinkpad X230. Which one do you guys suggest?

There is nearly nothing on the market that will work 15 hours a day and live for 2+ years. Tried lenovo and others, most hardware today is CRAP.
You have two choices either get a home class notebook which will live for 1 year on 15 hours per day use or get a workstation class notebook and that will live for 2 years.

If you are really loaded buy a japan only tough book to my knowledge these are the highest quality notebooks you can buy.

I thinks hp has a W series that are more work station oriented.
 
While I agree that most of today hardware is crap, if you use proper ventilation, most of them should make it for years.
 
Okay, I am trying to narrow down to a brand here... Please pick a brand - Dell or Lenovo or Others?
 
I'd lean towards lenovo. Back some years ago I purchased the x61s, back then the non plus ultra talking about small / travel notebooks. It's still doing the job for me even after falling down a moving staircare at an airport. Obviously the battery won't last as long as it was used to do before, but replacing it with the biggest available bought new will bring it back to easily 5-6 hrs.

Customer support for lenovo is also decent. In the end, you get what you pay for. There's a reason most of the frequent travellers rely on lenovo and/or dell.
 
Yes, You can go for Dell inspiron 15R, But have this on mind "None of the laptop work for 2+ years, if you use 15+ hours everyday"

I have a dell inspiron 15R core i5, It works perfectly for 2 years in average of 16+ hours per day (I replaced only the battery charger once). But now, the laptop makes trouble. It's restarting every few hours and my DVD drive no more working also i have notification on screen about to change the battery. It's time to pick a new one i think. So, It's enough if your laptop works for 2 years without a problem.
 
Go for Asus. It's not that popular but believe me it's far better than HP, Sony and Dell
 
lenovo is good for rough use. I used it for 6 yrs, without any issues. At last i donated to a needy boy. :)
 
They both suck bad, overpriced and even not full HD 1920x1080. check out the Sony VAIO E Series. I recommend model (SVE1711X1E) Real Beast!
 
Right now i am in love with Fujitsu. You can also try this brand.
Made in Japan Fujitsu is far better than Dell or Lenovo.
 
I'd go for Lenovo. Would not use any other brand. But I wouldn't go for the X-series at all. The cooling can never be as good in a tiny machine. The Thinkpad T530 is available with i7. It weights more, but the keyboard is a lot better, and it has a trackpoint.
 
I suggest to get a laptop with SSD hard drive if you can, it's like 10 times faster, with less noise and can handle shakes better.
 
Dell Inspiron 15R

I have a Dell Inspiron 15R Core i3. I never switch it off.
Mine is working 24x7 almost 2 years now.

My 2 Sony vaio laptops have lasted 2 and 4 years being left on 24/7. I definitely recommend taking a look at them. I'm not sure why other people are saying no computer will last that long. I leave them on all night running senuke and GSA so they're not just idle they are being used almost full throttle 24/7. The new models have some very nice specs too my buddy just bought one of my recommendation.
 
I have to sort of agree and disagree with ehabh.

I totally abuse my machines. Always. Pretty much the only time I turn my laptop off is when I am on the road, which is not often. The rest of the time, the machine is running 24-7. And yes, my machines do run for longer than 2 years. I am more on a 3 or 4 year buying cycle .... buy a top end machine, and use it till it croaks. Then repeat.

That said, I have to agree that you should stay away from consumer grade machines. For each of your brands, do a search for Mobile Workstation.
Dell - stay away from anything that is not a Precision model .... If you can stretch it, look for an M6700 or M4700
Lenovo - Only the Thinkpad machines - Their W5xx are pretty good and solid.
HP - Look for the W suffix. I quite like the 8xxx series.
Sony - They have some great machines, but can be pricey

The machine probably won't look as nice as that shiny one you'll see instore, but it does the work, and will keep on ticking long after those shiny instore machines have croaked.
 
Personally I have a small Hp mini laptop running Ubuntu.

It's a nice small laptop, but I miss my MBP ;( my chick took it cause she didn't have a laptop and now she doesn't want to give it back.

I'm thinking about buying a Macbook Air cause I've been wanting one for so long, what you guys think?
 
go with ASUS dude look you have two options go with ASUS or go for a mac :)
 
HP is the best and cheapest

I bought an HP laptop last month and im very happt with it
