Definition and Purpose of Cloaking

Hi all,

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm new to SEO and just came across this topic because it sounded kinda cool. Although I'm pretty sure this is some pretty advanced stuff I shouldn't be reading yet.

Can someone explain to me a simple use-case of cloaking. I'm assuming it's hiding the website from bots but I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around when people use it etc.

An example of when you would use cloaking is when you are running offers that are against the T&C's of the advertising network . For example you want to run a diet/adult offer on FB/Google . When you submit your campaign you would send FB's reviewers and bots to your nice clean lander/website and Joe public to your aggressive celebrity endorsed diet/adult lander . It can get a lot more interesting/complicated dependent on how far you want to go down the rabbit hole . Use the search function as you will find that the majority of questions you have will have been asked and answered many times before .

Ah I see, so I'm guessing this is more so for PPC. Thanks oscarboy, I'll have a further search for more content on it.
 
There are great guides on this forum. Do a little search and you'll find extensive articles about cloaking.
