So im new. Despite being members on many other forums of this type around the internet, im actually curios as to what determines an actual 'membership website'. Do people use these to make money or is this just literally having a forum with members that have upgraded and showing this off?

I no it might sound a little bit thin, but im interested as to the actual definition and terms.

Most membership sites require a upfront fee to "join" whereas a forum allows free membership with the option to upgrade later. The model of the membership site is to generate revenue from the very beginning - everybody that's inside the membership area has paid their dues and are serious about learning something.

Fair enough. Pretty much as I expected. The issue with membership sites is that unless you get your niche absolutely bang on there's no way you'l be able to guarantee any profits, or infact any members. Do you have examples of sites that do this?

Provide value and people will pay to join and stay in. Many membership sites have a recurring monthly fee because they provide value to the consumer month in and month out. Anywhere from $5 - 50 a month or more depending on the niche. Pick one and make it happen.

I'd rather classify a membership site as one where it requires an user to join in order to access most or all of the content whether for free or not. "Free" membership website can still turn huge profits, so having a requirement of a fee to join would not fit into my description.

I agree with Zapdos , Free or paid a membership site is basically a site that allows you to join via email or what have you to access a higher level of the site . For premium content videos , articles , tutorials or what ever .

Heres a list of membership platforms to get a better idea.
    1) Wishlist member
    2) Magic member
    3) Digital access pass
    4) S2member
