Dedicated Laptops..

..can be a good thing.

WalMart puts really nice little Acers on sale for $349-$399 from time to time and they are great little units; I have three.

By "dedicated" I mean a computer which is used for only ONE purpose and NEVER used from your home IP.

Let me say that again, you NEVER log on to your home IP with this box or for the project you are working on EXCEPT from WiFi locations away from your home..

You use a dedicated computer for only ONE project only and only log in from places like bars, coffee shops and other public places which offer free WiFi.

You also set up email addresses which you access ONLY via your dedicated computer.

You do NOT access you regular services from a dedicated box, ever.

You do not email your GF, you do not access your social networking sites, you don't talk about your car and you never, ever store any personal information of any kind on the dedicated box.

You never do anything on the dedicated box that you would do from home, nor do you access anything from home that you access on the dedicated laptop.

Now you don't use this box for penny-ante projects obviously, so you make certain that the project has enough built-in profit to more than pay for the box.

Depending on the nature of the project for which you have used this computer, at the end, you DESTROY the dedicated laptop and I mean with a hammer, destroy.

Then put the parts into the bottom of trashbags containing really smelly garbage and pitch the bags into dumpsters far from your house or office.

In any case, reduce the hard drive to bits and pieces or feed it to the Metal Munching Moon Mice.

That which does not exist cannot be tracked and information on a hard drive which has been turned into scrap metal cannot be recovered.

That's exactly how you can spam without getting caught, or do other illegal things...
As you only use public wifi connection any investigation would only lead to a dead end.
Using a dedicated laptop is not usefull at all if you only do "black hat seo", but it could be the salvation of any blackhat hacker, spammer or anyone who do these kind of illegal things that can really get you in trouble

There are all kinds of perfectly legal reasons that one might want to do this sort of thing and let me give you a few examples.

If you are maybe doing adult promos and are a city employee, a school teacher or work for almost any kind of corporation and your employer finds out, you will be done for, even though what you are doing is completely legal.

Work for a bank or other financial insitution and do blackhat on the side?

If they find out, you will be considered to be a potential "hacker" and therefore a security risk and you will be shown the door.

You own internet security should be of paramount importance to you and this technique is merely a very good way to maintain your privacy.

By the way, I use a Wifi detector sometimes when I am driving around and you would be surprised how many open networks there are and just how many free WiFi locations there are out there!

I often go to a bar for a burger and a beer while piggy-backing off the free public WiFi of the coffee shop next door.

I totally agree with that. And to add to what you said about wifi, I once drove for about 5minutes (only!) with my laptop scanning for wifi access, in a 60'000 inhabitants town (small isn't it?). I actually found 60 open wifi access, and 130 others that had required only a wep key that can be cracked in less than ten minutes (I've stopped scanning then because I had better things to do on that day actually lol). I'm not sure I can imagine what you would find from the streets of NY or LA ^^

Yeah but I like being able to buy new and also be able to get a direct exchange if there is a problem and places like WalMart will exchange for you if you politely raise Hell.

I agree, on the mail order stuff you eat the shipping if something is wrong in most cases.

I have had some luck getting good discount stuff from Fry's by asking for the open box stuff - then again you get the warranty issue.

I did however get an open box compaq from Wally World once for around 200.00 and sold it for around 400.00.


Anyways, yes please keep us informed on the other uses - I always like reading this stuff..
