A dedicated IP isn't a SEO factor which would improve your ranking, but it is a SEO risk to consider.
As a matter of fact, a shared IP could host thousands of porn website which would spoil the IP authority for instance.
Also, when you have a network of websites, it is recommanded to get a dedicated IP for each.

i guess if you have a shared hosting and other sites sharing that ip does any thing wrong, you get penalised too..
This may be true but you should take care anyway of who you buy hosting from. Dont buy from anyone
who hosts porn.
As for getting a seperate IP for each site, this is something that really annoys me - sorry -
Do you REALLY think there are enough IP's to go round if everyone took this view? even worse is the view
that each site needs a seperate CLASS C address. The worlds supply of IP addresses is not owned by one country -
they are supposed to be shared.
My View - if you are doing serious work. Get yourself a VPS or dedicated server with a few IP's
and make sure you only host your own sites on those IP's - no skanky stuff.

i dont think google gives a shit. if you're getting the right offpage/onpage and descent CTR on the serps.
Search engine engineers are far more aware about this issue, so you need not worry about website SEO and IP, however, having a dedicated IP address is beneficial and secure.
IMO, IP and SEO has no relation. TLD & ccTLD domain extenstions are always more important than the IP ever was.

In my experience the only time this has been a factor is when you're creating a blog network or other sort of link network. In that case you obviously want it to have a bunch of different IPs to remove the footprint. However in terms of hosting your actual good sites, I don't think it makes a difference.
