After trying unsuccessfully to find the proper decode tools for a couple of themes I downloaded, I found this. Just goes to show that sometimes we over complicate things instead of looking for the obvious.

Use the information below to decode and change the footer.php to your needs. I am not guaranteeing this works on all the encrypted footers, but I have not found a footer where this did not work

- Open the index.php and add <!- footer start -> above the <?php get_footer(); ?> and then add <!- footer end -> below it

- Save your changes and refresh the site
- Once the site has loaded view the source code and scroll down till you see the tags you added.
- Copy everything between <!- footer start -> and <!- footer end -> and use it to replace the encrypted code in the footer.php and edit as needed.
- Save changes and refresh and your footer should be updated with your changes.

I use hxxp://ottodestruct.com/decoder.php to decode footers. It works perfect. :)
 
Some footer has PHP code in it and this will not get those
 
Agree with richcamp... if it has php code you will not see it by looking at the source code of the page...

Try it before you claim it does not or can not work. I tried those links and they did not work for me when trying to decode the footers found in the themes downloaded from the posts below, but the method above did work.

Here is proof what I said above works. There is no need to decode anything just check out the source code and look for the footer tag.

I have installed a blog at the domain below and the footer.php has not been changed and is encrypted with the following

I have seen a footer with php code (see above post) - I am not saying you have to use it, I am saying see the example above and try it yourself before you act like a dick and try to shut someone down when all they are trying to do is provide help

Well, I do know what you mean but when I refresh my home page and view the page source nothing new shows up there. What else can I do to make it work? I really would like to eliminate the "SEO Powered by Platinum SEO Part".

What I am saying is go to index.php and add some kind of marker (ie <!? footer start ?> and <!? footer end ?>) to identify the footer code, then click "update file" and refresh the page.
Once you have refreshed the page open the source code (view page source in firefox) for your blog home page and copy the html code that is between <!? footer start ?> and <!? footer end ?> and add it to the footer.php file. Make any neccessary changes (ie - change their link to yours, etc) and then click "update file".
Go back to your blog home page and click refresh. When the page loads from the refresh, scroll to the bottom and you should see your new footer links instead of theirs.

If you are using a cache (like wp-super-cache) make sure you clear it first then refresh the page then look at the code. Try that ;)

I think you are overreacting here... we thank you for your input. Let me try to explain this a little better, my fault...

Your method works if there is NO php code in the footer that you need. Sometimes there IS php code in the footer that is needed and in this case your method will not work.

For example lets say your footer contained copyright code with an automatically updating year, the best way to do this is have code like this...

Copyright © MyDomain <? print(Date("Y")) ?>

So every year when the year changes your code will update on its own, 2010, 2011 etc...

Using your method all you will see is "Copyright © MyDomain 2010" and your year will never update... and this is because php code or asp code or server side code in general is not displayed to anyone by viewing the source code of the page, the code is executed on the server and all you see is the end result not the script/commands... you will however see basic html and javascript code because this is client side, meaning it happens on your computer not the server your visiting...

I think that is a great suggestion. I have always done something similar, but the simple addition of the commetn tags saves a lot of time searching through page source text, so thanks for that.

I would add that for a lot of standard templates, do as the OP suggested but add the call to the wp footer function too.

Man I agree with you there, I tried all of the tips and online decoders and I can't get this thing decoded. I di manage to use one of the online decoders, and it only decoded half of the code.

This thing is encoded with php encoder v1.0

Any other tips that I can try?

Yep. Do exactly what the op said, learn some basic php, and fill in the blanks.

It might have some widgets or plugin functionality in it, but you should be able to figure that out if you do a little wordpress research.

This method is solid, and is the quickest way to decode a footer if you know even a tiny bit of php. It beats using the crappy online decoders and it sure is hell better then decoding it yourself.
