The only links that count are those d0follow links coming from interlinked, indexable (http 200, no 'noindex' tag) pages on high authority domains, period.

Nofollow links are only good in terms of traffic, when placed on very active domain forums or message boards.
 
That is just one thing you can diversify. Link diversity is more complex.

I never did dof/nof one myself and never had issues.

However, what is worth to diversify is source type and homepage/inner page ratios.

I'm sorry, OP I read the whole article and never found a section talking about the inference above. I am perhaps not seeing things right!
