I know that a lot of the link juice for expired tumblrs is from all of the internal backlinks that exist.. at least that is my assumption.
First.. my scraping method in scrapebox.
1. Get a few seed tumblr blogs and feed them through the internal link extractor.
2. Take that output and de-dup it.. feed it back in.
3. Rinse and repeat a few times with lots of threads\proxies and you quickly have millions of blogs.
4. Feed them through the alive check and set it to 404 only and uncheck for it to follow redirects(this stops the adult content false positive). Export all that are 404.
5. My personal next step... Made a bot in Zennoposter that multithreaded through proxies.. tries to register every one and if it gets past the email page it saves that to a "working" list.
What i found was that many of the tumblr domains that were deactivated were not named "username".tumblr.com anymore. They were called "username"-deactivated"date".tumblr.com. Every one can be registered again and has data when you look up metrics. Since they have -Deactivated then that means they would have 0 internal links because it does not do any kind of a redirect to the old blog name because of the link change.
Have they always done this? If not.. then expired tumblrs may start to become a thing of the past.
