Have been lurking for a while but thought I'd finally join and say hi. My main job is network support (firewalls, servers etc) but I've spent far too much time building cms sites for small companies, handing them over and watching them die slowly and painfully. The most frequent comment I get nowadays is: "Yeah, the site's good but it's not SEO enough. How do we get no1 spot on google for 'pets'* ?"
(*it's not always pets. I mean, not every one of my customers is animal obsessed.)
After doing all the speed optimisation, sitemaps, url structures etc. etc. etc. I used to hand customers the google starter guide and say"you have about 5 pages, write stuff". After doing nothing for 6 months, their next call would be "can you write it for us?". So reading some of the stuff here has been a revelation and I'm now thinking about what I want to do instead.
I'm hoping this doesn't look like a "how do I make $50 per day on the internet immediately" question and won't be offended if anyone tells me to go lurk more. Having said that, if anyone has suggestions on a good place to start for someone who can build their own sites and self-host on their own (small) server, I'd love to hear your thoughts. I'm thinking of maybe amazon and aliexpress affiliate sites but still reading around atm.
Am looking forward to joining in more and, if I can be useful helping out with network/wordpress/firewall threads from time to time, that'd be awesome too.
