I have read that Google will even take measures of checking with local goverment as to verify a listing on places to see if it matches up with a DBA filed in that city?

I think this happens when a company goes to actually claim their listing and the business owner files a complaint if another person registered it.

I don't see how Google would ever know there is a DBA unless:

1. The places listing says "'Entity Name', DBA 'Company Name'"

or

2. Someone flags or challenges the listing

Even then, I find it hard to believe G would check. Some local governments have DBA listings online, but many don't. They would then resort to phone calls to the proper governmental office to verify. That doesn't seem very plausible to me IMO.
