I need to take a database management class for my programming degree and unsure of which to take out of Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server. Would someone be able to give me more info on to which has a better job outlook or which is more useful? or anything that is related would help. Thanks

Both are similar but I prefer Oracle. If you know one you can pick up on the other.

if you become a good DBA, you can get some very very good salary with Oracle. Same range as SAP expertise.

its a no brainer.

If going the Oracle route, which should i began learning? I see there are a few different types 11g,12c, etc?

I Suggest Oracle because :
Oracle has wide range of products: business-intelligence, business applications, Virtual Box and so on. Oracle database have pursuit of features that not only provide best performance for database, security for data in databases, good database administration but also many that are related with database like storage cost, redundant service for high-availability etc. some of the highlighted features include :

  1. Most efficient use of IT budget ie organizations need not worry of hardware cost much and can invest in core business.
  2. Reduces Server cost.
  3. Reduces Storage cost.
  4. Eliminate idle redundancy in data centers.
  5. Improve System Performance.

Oracle is BEST DBMS :)
