What just happened

I have a website, 3 months old, 10 pages, was ranking 22 for main keyword, then went up to 15th and first page on some long tails, now its got smacked out of the top 1000 for all the terms it was ranking on.

What I did

Used the backlinks genie free offer and built the following backlinks - 214 xrumer, 137 blog comments, 2 web 2.0s, 10 articles and 6 social bookmarks, all pointed at main site to a variety of sub pages, all done over the course of 5 days. Also from BHW made 50 edu forum profiles

seems like i did too much too quickly, but whats happened exactly? and will it ever come back? what should i do? i just wrote two more pages so now site has 12 articles. i seached on here for sandbox but it doesnt look like that happened because my site can still be found in google

Its so depressing when google kicks you in the face like this, dont feel like adding content that no one will ever see

Welcome to the club. Had my 'prize fighter' of the past two months work chucked in there today.

Yup same here. 3 sites in a the same amount of weeks penalised. Still have some going ok, but these were my main money earners. It seems that everytime progress is shown and one my sites creeps near the top end of page 1 it gets a kick up the arse.

If you built all those links for very similar keywords (exact match), it can be Penguin. Diversify your anchor text. Otherwise it is probably a dance and you would be ok.

What kind of anchors did you use?

Did you use 5 anchors...10..or 100. The amount of links is not that dangerous but the diversity of the anchors.

In addition the xrumer and blog comments are dangerous links and you should generally avoid to do them to your money site. Do those only to 2nd tier properties.

I am guessing you got hit by the Penguin because of lack of anchor diversity or because of the blog comments and xrumer blast.

Yeah, sounds like the dance to me. I had a new site that was at about position #13 for a bit then it dropped to page 55+ for a month. It eventually came back to page one after that month passed and has stayed there for the past month. I wasn't too sure if it was a penalty or a prolonged and brutal dance. I still haven't figured it out since I didn't make any changes when it was buried. I was just wanting to see what would happen. I kept and rode it out. Seems to have worked out okay for now.

I have a forgotten site running an Amazon script with thousands of products that is on course to get about a 400% increase in Google traffic today. Each product description is duplicated crap from Amazon's API. The funnier part is the products that sell have absolutely nothing to do with the theme of this website.

And Google calls Penguin a success? Ummm, I think not!

The site I am talking about above has few links to it and has bounced in traffic like this since Penguin was released. Some days it gets great traffic and other days back to normal. This tells me Google is still trying to tame their zoo animals. In other words, the SERPS are not stable yet so don't be quick to judge what is happening or make any hasty moves to correct it.

I think I used about 10 different anchors

Anyway I have just checked and it has re appeared at number 165 so it seems to be a dance

its a tough gig this IM! 1 step forward and 2 steps back. so hard to know what to do, seems to come down to luck, which isnt an ideal thing to base a business on

I will try to get some traffic off facebook or twitter somehow

Having the same problem here. I've only used retweets, social bookmarks (2x250), high PR profiles, build a few 2.0s (blasted them) and manually (!) submitted maybe 30 blog comments. I used more than 3 anchors for each of my 10 long-tail KWs and 5-7 for the homepage.

Do you guys think it's a dance or have I done too much over the past 2-3 weeks?

I just thought that maybe it's a relevancy issue.
Those links that were blasted would have been on totally random forums or blogs, not on topic

Eg if u have a site about baking cakes and say 80% of baclinks are from cooking related forums articles or blogs that looks natural

But if only20% are from on topic sites and the rest from random sites looks like spam. That would be a good description of my backlinks.

Ok from now on I'll only hit main site with relevant links and save the spam for the next tier down

I agree this IM is tough. I want to try senukex, but can't afford it yet. I keep waiting to get a bounce on my scrapebox blasts...but so far I rank sub-100 and get zero search referrals.

the site has popped back up exactly where it used to be

I forgot to mention i changed some text on the site, making more keyword density and bolding them. after i did this it dropped. now i put it back how it was and it is back on page 2
