I am planning to build a website, where users would register, add their private data such as interests, password, email, nickname, age, gender and etc. Also use their Paypal or Credit Card to deposit money to their virtual accounts.

The question is: what I need to know about keeping customer private data secure? I know that I have to encrypt passwords, also let users to see their private data and etc. But do I need to confirm any international privacy standards to be able to collect information globally?

Thank you.

In Europe you have to throw up the cookie policies and make sure users agree to it. Also make sure you have a strong ssl security certificate for your website. Make sure your terms and conditions are flatly spelled out on your website too.

Google the PCI security standard also and see if any of that will apply to you.
