I'm going to invest a little extra money I have in bitcoin and I just want to see what everyone's current thoughts are. Being the volatile market it is I know it's a bit risky, but whatever, right?

Bitcoin will be around for a while but as far as profitability im not sure it's just way to risky. Ethereum is a smarter investment imo

Yea bitcoin is still up and running its not the first time something like that has happened but check out r/Bitcoin or many of the bitcoin blogs and forums. Bitcoin is still a hot topic going strong in 2017 it's not gonna lack in any info because the hype just keeps growing.

dont invest right now
it will go down eventually maybe after 5k it will fluctuate very low. then buy with all your cash.
but if your not holding and want to day trade other alts. its probably fine.

^^^ said it perfectly
Bitcoin is going to drop soon it already bubbled and now with the fall of major darknet markets and the recent btc fork theres a lot of controversy that will hurt its value

thank you all for the insight. I'll probably wait about another month for a dip and then invest a little.

Only put in what you're willing to lose. If the money you invest causes you to be worried about the price going up/down, then you are not ready to invest in such a volatile market. Nobody here can tell you when the right time to buy in is. I recommend you follow news relating to Bitcoin and other popular digital currencies and make your own judgement. Good luck.

I started investing in crypto about a year ago, and I can say it is quite profitable if you have a disciplined method of approach. It shouldn't be a short term pump and dump approach, as that is more like gambling than investing. A YouTuber called bitesizebitcoin has a good approach that I myself recommend following (as it is similar to what I have been doing before finding him).

Things like; waiting to buy, wanting to buy a whole bitcoin, wanting to sell at first sign of low or high, approaching it as a way to make a living as opposed to it being a supplemental investment for extra money, spending money you need as opposed to money you can risk, and not doing your research before investing, are all things that will kill your investment and profitability. Also, think HARD about security and where you will keep your currency, as it is a lot more complicated than using some investment banking service.
