It helps to read a lot or for lazy people to at least check trending crypto projects on coingecko and coinmarketcap.
I go a step further and check which type of projects are hottest at presale and ido platforms.
This give you a good idea in what investors are putting money now.

For most people it makes most sense to just stack BTC and maybe some ETH.
Personally I had some luck with some altcoins like AVAX because friends recommended it with me (they are very involved with crypto) and I was able to get more Sats / BTC through these Altcoin trades.

If you do not want to do the research, stick with only two coins : BTC and ETH.
