A friend just asked me about mining a cryptocurrency called chia.

He tells me that they told him that they did it with hard drives and that they earned 10 dollars for every 1000 GB, the truth is I have no information about this, it seems a bit strange to me

what do you know about this?

It's a new crypto that can be mined by writing with your hard drive/solid state drive. Downside is that it'll be dead in less than 2 months, you can search it up.
This was made so that it could be as decentralized as possible, because everyone has a storage component on their computers, contrary to specialized hardware needed to mine BTC at an efficient rate.

As far as I know you can't get rewards of only $10 as there are no pools yet.
You either get 2 chia per reward or nothing.

However, if you say $10 for every 1 tb, does your friend run hard drives with 300 tb ?

If you have a bunch of hard drives to burn (ideally dozens of tb) and a bit of electricity to run them, you might as well try it.
Last time I checked all the data needed to run chia is online.

I googled and read a bit.

One article said this will raise the price of hard drives much like btc caused a jump in vid card prices. I think it would really have to take off for that to happen.

Another said the currency jumped after Elon/Tesla stopped taking btc due to the environmental impact. Green cryptocurrencies may be the (near) future.

I didn't find anything about it disappearing in 2 months.

It's been on coingecko for only a week and has jumped 12% in 7 days but down 5% in last 24 hrs.
