Creating Thousands of Pages With the Same Content

There is a site in my niche that is ranking well for a large number of cities and towns. Basically they take the same exact content and add the city name to each page in several locations. They also add in the zip codes for each city. I would think they wouldn't rank too high because of having very similar content on each page but they are on the first page for many of the cities in the US. Since the last update, they have been gaining in rank. This sounds like an easier way to rank then what I'm currently doing which is manually writing content for the major cities.

They have thousands of these pages and I don't think they do much back linking outside of their site. I was thinking of doing the same kind of thing to test it out. How should I go about changing the page so each is different? Also, is anyone else having success with this? If I do this, should I space out when I publish the pages?

Is it that or is it the same content presented using Ajax.

Google has never been very useful at Ajax, because of the JavaScript delivery.
 
I don't think they are using Ajax. I don't think I see any signs in the code. How could I tell for sure?
 
Years back travel agencies did that, using the same content for every city or destination for travel. The got hit bad. For local rankings I've seen dup content work. I would change enough to pass a copyscape check personally.
 
Maybe I will mix it up a little more. I think I will keep doing the manual work on the site I'm currently working on but create a new website just for testing out this generated content on a different hosting account. I'll let you know how it goes.

I will try to find out how to add the zip codes to each page. It looks like I might be able to find a zip code database. Maybe I can copy it and hook the site up to a database so it will fetch the zip codes for each city.
 
Doesn't matter if they are getting away with it now, it is bad practice.
 
Yeah but they are making money with it now. It is worth it if it takes a year or even months for Google to penalize.
 
You could set up a test site doing this if you really want to try. But for sure, Google is not happy about this and you will get hit for it.

I'm actually surprised that this old approach is still working, so it might not be as easy to replicate as you might think.
 
I actually looked a little more and I see other niches that have this. I think these sites are doing well after the last refresh (well especially this one in my niche). Makes no sense if Google is trying to focus on quality. I think they are actually trying to push little sites out and instead promote things like yelp, yellowpages, etc so the little guys are forced to do Adwords if they aren't continuously working on SEO and adding content. These sites must be seen as one of the big sites that should be promoted since they have so many pages.
 
You should try it on a fresh domain and keep making manual content for you current domain
