I'm looking for a tool (preferably free) to create an XML sitemap that I can submit to Google Webmaster Tools for a website that has over 1000 pages.

Can anyone recommend a specific tool for this?

Also, what are peoples views on the improtance of having a sitemap for such a website these days, or is it not important?!

    Thanks

gsitecrawler is a good program for bigger sites. you might have to create a sitemap index page and split the sitemaps up into different files.

Thanks for the recommendation, but this program seems pretty complicated and hard work for what it actually is, are there any other free alternatives anyone knows of?

What kinda website do you have?

    1. HTML
    2. WP
    3. Joomla?

If Joomla, there's an extension called xmap. Provides you xml sitemap at a click of mouse.

It is very essential that you submit a sitemap to google webmasters so Google can understand the structure of your website. You can also set indexing speed preferences and have you site indexed sooner.

Also, should I create a seperate sitemap using the same method, but specifically for images, and name it something like 'images-sitemap.xml' and upload via Webmaster Tools? Any thoughts on this?
