Creating New Article Site - Where does EzineArticles Go Wrong?

Also you must not accept general articles, as it is impossible to get any SE traffic for these.

Sorry i must disagree, accepting articles on General topics is actually a good idea as this will give an impression that the directory is not running on a sole mission of adds and traffic. Accepting General articles will give a good impression on visitors and users, that is what search Engines loves. So the idea is let the SE follow you.. and never solely follow SEs.

This is going to be sooooooooooo much work. I hope you have a fulltime staff like eZine....

Are you up and running yet? Id be happy to submit some good quality stuff

Congratz to OP for having the guts to take up this momentous task. An article directory is a big, big thing and if done right can make or break several other writers (including the site owner). I write on a few rev sharing site and I think in this day and age it is necessary to include revenue sharing or incentivization of some kind. Additionally, you'll want to allow 1 or 2 outbound links (which could be affiliate links too).

I just had a lame idea. Here it is and it will take a lot to implement but it is worth a thought (IMO):
1. You can create a facebook - farmville kind of thing. Each writer could have a pad of their own which they could decorate as per their choice - maybe only a different color to start with, their avatar (all this is present in Yahoo) and some other stuff. If the graphics is difficult you could opt to allow for other scrapbook like links instead (profile links to be visible on article pages with gadgets/widgets like favorite movie/book/quote) as part of personalizing the page.
2. You could build a community around these choices. People with similar choices could discuss their preferences in the lounge.
3. Have easy contests like iB.
4. Incentive for including linking to other writer's articles.
5. Badges and stuff for participating in the community.
6. Stepped adsense or other kind of revenue.
7. To get more and more writers interested you'll need to offer early bird incentive for limited period. This can be cash reward for X no. of articles. Or higher adsense revenue cut.
8. Test with non-adsense revenue which can be a big bait for many people who don't get approved for adsense or have been banned.

Even if these are not things you can implement from the beginning, you can promise them as upcoming attractions.

VERY IMPORTANTLY: You'll need to include manual review. You can study the iB manual review model for first 10 articles before getting approved for automatic publishing or not.

GOOD LUCK WITH EVERYTHING. Give me a shoutout when things are ready, I'll be happy to write or moderate or anything you want.

- they dont got revenue sharing
- no images on articles
- they never promote or advertize

I have noticed that ezinearticles has died down in popularity over the years. Maybe it's just me, but I think they've had a drop in authority over the last few years thanks to google's annoying updates.

Seriously what kind of incentive are you offering to attract good writers? I also want to know what kind of Anti spam measures do you have in mind, because it would be again attract a lot of negative seo.

OK, I'll bite...

My biggest quirk with sites like EZA is canned responses when articles are rejected. If you can make an effort to give real feedback, and not just some crap like, "violates TOS," or "Grammar issues," which doesn't really explain why it was rejected, then that would be appreciated by probably most everyone who submits.
