Creating affiliates for YOUR ecommerce store?

Anybody have any experience doing this? I have a client that I think could use this, as they are growing just enough to be able to really expand given the right help. What goes into creating an affiliate network to pipe INTO a site, rather than the usual (being an affiliate FOR somebody).

I have affiliates for my store. I use mals for the affiliates to sign in and keep track of their commissions. If your client has a lot to spend, tell them to go to linkshare. When I looked into it, it was 10k. Maybe it went up, not sure. It's a lot but it's worth it. Your client will get thousands of affiliates and will probably jump in another income bracket. I am going to do linkshare when my last kid finishes college. He starts in Jan. I have four years to wait before I make major purchases.

depends on the country and if you want to DIY. We looked into it and tbh it's better to get a network to build up your aff base then contact them to switch them to an inhouse one down the line. Finding it a bit harder with my new e-cig one to do however..

Is there any downside/dangers to making them an affiliate?

There are no downsides in my opinion. The more people who want to sell your stuff the better. The only thing is that it's a pain in the you know what when you aren't part of a network like linkshare.

Depending on your cms there are built in plugins, I know Magento has a few and yes affiliates are awesome id you find the right ones.

We have a weight loss site and one of our affiliates owns a gym so they are killing it, others do well to through various methods. Its a win/win no start up for them and cuts our advo costs down as well as limits OUR reliance on the big "G"...

some aff can mis-sell your product which leads to returns/legal cases if not handled correctly. Nothing in retail is entirely safe.

Lets say it's something common like surf boards... how the heck could they misrepresent or screw that up? They sell really common items that are pretty niche. Is it as good of bang/buck as CPV/PPV or CPA is?
