Creating a new site: Publishing before site is finished causes SERP problems in longterm?

So I'm creating a new site at the moment which I want to rank for some fairly tough keywords.

Will it affect the way my site is ranked if I publish it before it's even half finished?

The reason why I want to publish it now is because I'm new to this kind of web design (normally use an online editor :rolleyes:) and the tutorial I'm following to learn all these steps wants me to publish right away so I start to understand how the uploading side works..

Will it affect how google views and ranks my site in the longterm?

an how would I do that? Sorry for the fuckin newb question! It's long for me to ask these kinda question, feel like a f***ing newb but I been marketing since 2007. allow google making me go to these measures! F**k google - know I'm not the first to say and certainly not the last..! haha
 
Are you using Wordpress? If you are, then just make it private using the plugin below until you're done making changes. That's what I do when I'm making a whole bunch of changes and I want to make sure none of it is indexed at all.

You could also go to Settings > Privacy > block search engines.
 
Just add the following robot.txt file to your root directory.

Code: 
User-agent: *
disallow: /

Don't forget to change it when you have finished the development.
 
so judging by the response it google WILL rank you badly in future if you publish before it's finished
 
Hi,

Sorry for bumping this but no one really gave me a solid answer.. My question is Will publishing my site really negatively affect my ranking in google and other search engines at a later date? Or am I safe to publish my site before it's complete and it wont really affect future rankings that much?

Just do not start backlinking before you are satisfied with your site.
 
it wont affect you site negatively, though you wont rank well until you have content. It actually helps you because time is a factor in ranking and if your site is online with no content when you add content later youll see ranking quicker than if you have done it all in one shot.

Agreed. Assuming you have set some of your keywords (metas+body), nothing is preventing you from re-indexing your site when it is complete. The only thing I do not like about putting a site up before it is complete is waiting for the reindexing. It is much nicer and easier to index once the first time. Otherwise you will be sitting around pinging your site and waiting, when those pings and time could be put to backlinks and other sem.
 
As soon as I own a domain I put up a single page related to whatever it is that the site will be offering with an image with no alt tags saying "under construction" - I then build the site bit by bit until it's finished when I remove the image.

Never harmed my rankings in any way and it means when you actually get going with the linkbuilding your site's already mature.

I've even had sites with 20 or so empty pages named after my target keywords that I'll gradually build up no problems - sure they rank for sh*t at the start but as content gets added they move up the serps.

Actually i say they rank for sh*t but I've got one .com thats an exact match keyphrase thats number one for the phrase, sees good traffic and theres nothing on it at all. Note to self: get something up you fool
 
I always build sites live. I don't start backlinking until it's completed though, and I have seen no negatives from it.
 
I don't see it having a negative effect on your website, where you would have to be concerned about ranking. But follow a few of the advice already suggested such as no backlinking and editing your robot.txt file and you should be good for now.
 
alright thanks for all the replies - sounds good. NO backlinks and edit robot.txt..

But what I'm gathering from an overall consensus is it won't really harm your rankings in the longterm

robots.txt? i suppose this is an option to stop ropots crawling your website for some time till you get it ready
