Can a forum be profitable? I have been trying to do research for my niche and there is only like 3 forums for my niche and they have 70-80k members each with 300-400 active online members at a time. Would starting my own forum be a good idea? or just adding one to my site? just looking for some feedback thanks!

I think trying to become competition against those 3 websites would be hard going, unless you can entice them with some kind of offer related to your niche or quality posted content. No one will want to join a related forum that has considerably less users and content.

That's my opinion anyway

Personally I think forums, usually, are too much hard work unless you are taking over an established forum.

I think if there is some type of marketplace you can make good money, but otherwise, I think it is too much work. With all the spam filtering and rule breaking, you would need to really be able to dedicate time to it.

Forums can make a lot of money
if you have the right niche

Establishing a forum in a valuable niche takes a lot of time, work and money, but it could pay off greatly IF you manage to become an authority. If you want to go that way you may want to look into Postloop to fake an initial userbase and an active forum to build a foundation. There are quite a few people on Postloop who come from BHW and similar sites, promoting forums about Poker, Casino, SEO, E- Cigarettes and just about everything that can bring in nice commissions.

Best of luck to you.

I really feel that you will be able to make a profit if you work hard enough at it. Just offer incentives and make others want to join your site, and do your SEO and you will be set:)
