I have a used car dealership that I'm trying to rank. I have created quite a bit of content on it but have quite a bit of car information in my head (been in the business for 15 years).

I'm reading how much google loves blogs and the fact that its an effective way to get your backlinks and keep it fresh I'm sold. My question is this. Is it a good/bad idea to have a blog on my brick and mortar website or is it smarter to create a blog from completely scratch and just backlink to my web page?

Keep the link juice in your dealership domain... In simpler words, build your blog in a subfolder (domain.com/folder), but make sure you keep it clean, whatever may harm your blog may harm your website.

If you plan being a bit more aggressive than create it in an independent domain.

Sure create a subdomain and blog until you go crazy it will add a lot of valuable content your website and you can
target plenty vital keywords for your website.
