It's possible but in fact it's wastage of time and can be taken down.
 
If you're going the cheap route, start off on Freehostia for web hosting, but do not ever use a free domain name. Just pay the $10 to register a new TLD and use it with Freehostia. Once you're generating traffic (at least 100 unique visitors a day) and hopefully some small income from your website, move on to paid shared hosting at Hostgator (it's about $4 a month for their hatchling plan) or use Freehostia's paid hosting plan (starts at $3 a month for their Watercircle plan, but you might as well just migrate your entire website to Hostgator for that price).

If at any time you are worried that your website will be taken down, then just keep a regular backup of your files and SQL database. That way, in case something does happen to your website, you can easily restore it on a different web host.

With out subdomain you cant get any website for free.

But there is only one way take free domain & find the free hosting. They are hot good quality. Most of the they are down.
 
Any particular reasons why you don't want subdomain? I've started with blogspot and they are works just fine.
 
Dude domains are cheap nowadays, try to get some coupons.

You will get problems with free domains, limitations, deletion.
 
Like everyone is saying, the cheapest you're going to get is with those dollar domain coupons from godaddy. The free hosting sites are always a problem and I've had several sites disappear from them without any notice. If you can't afford the normal rate for hosting, check out ebay. Resellers there have offers as low as 99 cents a year. It sounds like a scam, but I've used many of them and they actually work out ok. If you can just find a couple bucks somewhere, it will give you more possibilities and save you headache later.

You're going to cripple yourself from the onset if you only run with free hosting or registration. Almost every kind of business has some scale of 'buy-in.' If you're really looking to get into IM, be willing to drop the initial bucks and purchase your foundation!
 
I use tumblr (on my own domains) as I can modify the whole front-end the way I want.
 
I started my first site for free with weebly (because I'm code stupid) and continue to use their .weebly domain. I'd buy a dollar domain from godaddy if I ever decided on one, but even as is, the site gets good traffic and decent money. All for free. Ya just gotta have good content and promote the hell out of it. In a targeted fashion of course.
