I'm going to go with anchor text ratios as at least partially to blame.
A couple of my sites have been affected, however, one site in particular is interesting. Every target keyword has dropped, which regretably did have exact text matches in at least some of the backlinks, circa 5%. The keywords which had very few or zero partial or exact matches remain strong and have not been affected.
I'm still confused as to how some of my competitors remain strong with 10% exact matches and obvious pbn use?!

My 3% exact anchor txt for a keyword went from page 2 rank 15 to N/A and has not been back since mar 7th
My 20% exact anchor went from position 1 to 7 idk if anchors are the problem
This update is really fked up and hard to figure it out. Even though my website overall wasn't affected by it 2 of my inner pages targeting specific keywords are still jumping up and down like crazy.
What's puzzling to me is that only some keywords are jumping and the rest are as solid as a rock. Which makes me think that if this update was 100% link related, all of my keywords would have been hammered.
Since only half of them are still doing the 'google dance,' and the rest are doing OK I think that this update is more related to 'on page SEO' OR 'on page SEO' of your backlinks or PBN. If it was 100% related to backlinks, I'd imagine that all the keywords in question would have been affected. Which is not the case.
P.S. Content is original, no ads, around 3,000 to 5,000 words per article and about 5 or 6 affiliate links which technically should not be visible to google bots because of the WP plugin that I use.And most of the back links are naked URLs.

The updat fk'ed us all good in the arse. went from $5k to $0 real quick. I'm but hurt and im frustrated
Eventually, I'll analyze the keywords density of my 'on page' and 'off page' (PBN backlinks posts) density to see if there is a link. But it'll take some time. Right now I'm busy on a project that's independent of the google organic sh%^. Like they say, don't put all your eggs in one basket.
I forgot to mention, back in Sep/Oct 2016 when Penguin became live and google confirmed it, they said that one of the ranking factors they're looking for in regards to backlinks is 'why the link is there' which gets us to keywords density of your backlink posts on your PBN. I could be right or could be wrong. However, seeing the discrepancies between affected websites by this update, nothing is off the table. It's like, forget the obvious and drill deep ...

That's obviously a good decision. "Never put all your eggs in a basket". I am also planning to make an experimental website, which will gain traffic only from Bing, yahoo and Social media. Lets see what happens.

Short update: A lot of my sites have recovered, the majority of my keywords are placed better than before, some are still dancing. But generally speaking it seems like most of the keywords are recovering, slowly but surely. I will update again in a week or so.

Showing different links to Google vs to other visitors is against Google's ToS and would indicate a site that has a different agenda from the one it is trying to promote to Google.
It might not be a factor in this update, but it could be in a future one.
What is to stop Google from crawling websites using IP addresses and identifiers that don't identify what it is? It would be a great way of identifying brands from affiliates.

1) How long after you removed tag pages from index you saw a recovery?
2) Also, how to remove tag pages? Just set to Noindex them in sitemap and then re-submit sitemap to Google?
Hi, after my site got hit, I noticed too that my tag pages and category pages were causing a lot of duplicate content.
I also lost several positions in the serps for quite a few keywords. Turns out I have all sorts of duplicate content caused by tags and category pages (I'm new to this!).
I would like to follow your method. Is this how you did it?
1) Delete tag pages and thin content pages (did you delete ALL tag pages?)
2) Use the "Remove URLs" feature in Search Console
How about setting tag pages to "no-index" instead of deleting them? I'm worried about littering my site with 404s.
Anything else? Did you resubmit sitemaps or anything else at all?

Ok, I've spent some time searching for a pattern and here is what I found out:
First of all, on March 7-9th there were at least two types of updates, one, probably for content (too much ads) and second one for backlinks - that's why so many debates.
I work in a payday loans niche, so most websites here have no ads. Three of my websites got hit, also several competitors' websites got hit.
As for my websites, I have exactly the same backlinks as most competitors do: no PBNs, some business catalogs, some comments, profiles, paid catalogs like botw etc,
so the quality of the backlinks can be excluded since other websites with same links are still ranking.
The next thought was anchor text density, but I haven't found any pattern here since some websites with much more spammy anchor text profiles are still ranking.
After some more research I might have found the reason - ratio of low quality to good quality backlinks.
Low quality = the website has no organic traffic at all (checked via ahrefs).
Just think about it, if the websites can not be found in Google, so how did anyone add a link to it?
Most of the websites that got hit had at least 1/3 of low quality links, while the websites that are still ranking have at most 1/4 of such links.
I'm pretty sure that these ratios vary from niche to niche.
