One guy reported a comeback.

Site with 20 pages, he observed that 5 were desinxed. The pages had thin content (3-4imgs + 150 words + 3 ads) and a link to the home. What he did:
  • Removed ads
  • Added content
  • Deleted the links to the home

That happened:

Coincidence?o_O

Nice one! It's consistent with what I'm experiencing. I have shared a couple pages earlier, I have managed to get back my most important keyword by beefing up the content AND the content of 6 PBN pages that linked to that page. I hope it's not too early to say..

The more I look at this update, it is just more of the same from Google, I mean just like every other update over the last few years but always with a small twist.

1- Google sends out it's animals, penguins or whatever you want to call them to trim the fat from their massive database which gets bloated with shit pages and shit sites over time.

2- They release the new uncluttered smaller database to the public without so many shit sites/pages in it. This can take weeks to roll out to all data reporting centers.

3- People start yelling as they see sites bounce up and down, the shittier the backlinks in their profile, the more they move, but even the so-called "clean sites" have some crap pointing to them so they move a bit as well... or could.

4- Google got rid of some of the backlinks everybody had, be it tier1, tier2... tier 55 whatever, everyone get to work finding new backlinks and all will be fine again... with Google it's always the backlinks, and prob always will be...

The only thing that I can confirm is that Google does not like "us" having their ads on our pages. Once removed, site is coming back. Maybe only higher quality sites, whatever that means, can show google ads? Anyone find shit sites with Google ads on them still ranking?

"I changed x and one hour later I was ranking x positions higher"

>implying Google recrawls your shit tier viagra/ casino site every few minutes

This is hilarious

Whichever clown said it was an update against PBN couldn't have been more wrong. My site ranking alone on PBNs actually improved after the March 8th update, the upward graph start is from 8th

My legit 100% natural website got hit on the other hand and yes i am not an idiot who doesn't know what's blackhat and what's natural links. It was an expired domain that was about a political movement and gained natural links over the year, i never had to build any links to it because it ranked great but after the update, rankings took a dive.

This update must be about content or some other crap, definitely not PBNs.

So I recovered (mostly) for some of my major keywords today. I feel like it may have had something to do with the technical difficulties of moving to https, so I can't say whether or not "Fred" was responsible for screwing my rankings the last few days.

I already submit my site for start, here is the link http://158.69.193.85/form.php to the form, please be honest and share it with others who lost rankings due to last update (FRED march 8th or after). The more info we collect = faster we will find out what do we have in common. Everybody could see results of submissions at the bottom of the form (link to results)

Let's keep this running, results are already confirming the general impression that neither links nor ads, but content (quality, not quantity) seems to be the problem here.

15 years old 0 link building legit company - thats what I call whitehat I bet google calls it whitehat too - losing 70% traffic in one night.

2 months old site, 300 refering domains in first 2 months of website going live , 15% exact match anchor , 30 articles skyrocketing to top 3 on multiple phrases 5k ms - 600% increase in traffic this is what I call blackhat

These are not my sites, but sites of companies i know

These two happened after update was already rolling. Now tell me what your logic tells you?
My logic tells me this isn't to do with links.

Shitty content? Over optimization?

The strange thing I've noticed is... some people whom have shared with me their sites, and so are my clients, all have word length of 1,000+, yet they are still hit.

Keep in mind that their content are well written. Most of my client's sites are written by Canadian writers too.

If even a content length of 1,000 aren't spared, then it may have to do with legitimacy or credibility. Then again, I've seen some websites barely a year old and they're ranking well. So it has to do with something else.

What about content on T1 backlinks? Quality articles or second tier?

This lines up with exactly what we are seeing, it's the links

15 years old 0 link building legit company - Google cleans up database, lots of old links cut, this sites rankings based on these older links, but now fewer

2 months old site, 300 refering domains in first 2 months - lots of new links, not affected from old links being cut

Bullshit. Google may adjust the dial and weigh different types of links differently over time. But they sure as shit don't get up one day and just decide to ignore a huge part of the link graph based on wacky fucking shit like; link xyz just had its 15th birthday.

Your genius also doesn't factor in that the 15 year old site probably has newer back links other than those it gained right at its conception.

could be true. my site is 1.5 month old and after update it jumped from N/A/ and posirtions #20-#99 to #3-#15
also noticed new competitors (with brand new sites).
they fired update in the same time my backlinks got indexed so who knows

It is to early to know if your new website will stay there...

"the 15 year old site probably has" = natural backlinks come in much slower than the ones from people pushing a new site. This "may" be true but the 15 year old still appears to have lost some power to take the drop. Power = Page Rank = Links

It does not have to be direct links, it could be lost power from deeper pages that were linking to their "natural" tier 1 links, it's all a chain reaction that effects all sites up the line.

Just to note, I have been doing SEO since the 90's and have hundreds of sites, they all are showing the same thing. Sites that we have been updating the backlinks to are doing fine, older sites that have been left for a while are showing slight dips. Sites we have been pushing harder are rising.

New sites are rising probably because of the way G rolls out the update - first it hits the older, established sites, what allows to gather much more valuable data about the impact of the update, and when this gets assessed G moves to newer sites. We'll probably see some more rapid changes in coming days.

Where did you get that crazy info??? Older established sites are what Google targets first.... really?

Do you really think there will be dramatic changes from now on? Everything seems to be pretty stable for the past few days. Hope it was true, but I think it's time to start taking action on recovery plan.

I'm in the same boat is you in terms of wanting to create a recovery plan.

The only problem is that we still don't know WHAT is causing the drops.

We have some theories, sure, but I'm still hesitant to make any knee jerk reactions that could actually hurt my rankings even more rather than help them. I'llp probably just wait for a few more weeks and see how things play out.

eh...

You're G., you're rolling our a big update (judging by the volatility, one of the biggest in quite a long time) you're more interested in how it affects older, bigger sites, often with established authority, a solid links base, well recognised etc. not new sites that can be abandoned in next few months, are affected by factors that make fresh sites harder to rank, have unstable link profile, can change their structure in just few days etc.
