Whatever you're going to use commercially, you better get a legit copy of. Most, uhm, 'modified' scripts have either a backdoor or a payload installed, or are still traceable due to certain footprints. Plus, the most important part of all, it puts you in the right mindset, aka business mode. Sure, you may use the other version locally to test the script and see if it fits your needs, but for a live website it's usually a no-no. And as aakon mentioned, more often than not, you're actually paying for support, not the script itself.

Last year I got kind of desperate trying to search for a cracked script, but then I realised I was stupid in wasting my time thinking I'd get my hands on one. Usually alot of cracked script come with a hidden price - it could end up having backdoors etc (as roamer said) that could end up wreaking havoc with your hosting account. I remember one time I downloaded a cracked web directory scripts and my site ended up getting hacked multiple times.
In short, if you want a relatively hassle free experience, I'd recommend buying the script and having the benefits of the provided support with it.

Cracked or nulled script will get you cracked or nulled sooner or later. I would still advise you to go with a similar script that is paid or free, instead of nulled ones.
Also, see if you can use some other script, as there are already lots of clones around...

I've done it all with the fiverrscript. I first bought a copy off of ebay 2 years ago and that didn't work correctly (it was a crack).
I then purchased the copy and have bought ALL updates from them legitimately.
About a week ago some user posted a job on the site for a fiverrscript crack. I get dozens of jobs posted every day and I didn't see it BUT they saw it and they disabled the script.
I see 2 problems with fiverrscript.
1. They can disable the script for any reason and claim it "violates their TOS"
So once you buy the script, IT IS NOT YOURS. The script calls home on every load up and even though you may have paid them thousands of dollars for updates/addons/installs they can do what they want with "their script" (even though you paid for it and it is supposed to be yours)
2. Because of this call home feature if their "verification" is slow, your site is slow.
Does the script work well? Yes. I have put it to the test and have processed hundreds of thousands of dollars with it. It works.
But beware, it is not yours even after purchase.

I warned them nicely not to do it again. I told them I have people asking me every day how their script performs (and that is true) and I would like to say nice things about them.
But like I said, does it work? Yeah. But be warned, they control your site from a distance (pretty fucked up if you asked me)

this is bollocks, i might get developer to write it for me based on that script- if its even possible?
Best way to go any day but I would suggest that you have a partnership with the developer and have him with you along and give him a cut...

As much as possible use your own script. Some of it has backdoor access and you may want to let stealers/hackers to get in on your site especially when your site is promising or skyrocketing in profit.
