I'm new to Cpanel. I recently bought a new domain and, when after four days I couldn't find it in Cpanel, I was told by support that to use the new domain I'd have to install it as an add-on to the existing domain. The question is why would I by a domain for $10 when I could've installed it free as an add-on domain. Also what would happen to this domain and the WP sites I'm going to build on it when and if I decide to let the top domain expire?

Your best bet would be to host your domain separately so when you get rid of your other domain it will be ok.

If you need a good cheap host pm me.

What are the domains you own? What did you put as the primary domain? This shouldn't be a problem if you only need one domain.

Hi equalizer,
I may well have misunderstood you but I'll try to answer:
Registering a domain and then installing it in your cpanel are 2 separate things.

So, you register the domain for your $10, then install the name of the domain into your cpanel, then add a site to it.

If you open a brand new hosting account you can install the name of the domain as the 'main domain'
OR
If you already have a hosting account with a 'main' domain then you install the name of the domain you just bought as an 'addon'

I hope that helps.
If you need any further advice you're very welcome to pm me :)

Thanks ezlegion, I guess this is the way it's done with Cpanel. So that domain purchase was not necessary. I have a hosting acct. with Dreamhost and they have a different "panel", and all the domains I have there are standalone and separate from each other, so I thought that was the system, but it's not so with Cpanel. Question: is it possible to promote the domain I just purchased and make it the top domain, and demote the top domain to an add-on domain or sub-domain?

Well, when I signed up with this hosting company, I also bought a domain in the insurance niche. Then four days ago I bought a domain in the fat loss niche, because I thought it wouldn't look good to have a sub-domain or add-on domain inside an insurance domain. But that's exactly what I have now. Maybe it doesn't matter, I don't know.
