cpanel alternatives? Do you use one?

One of my outsourcers recomended a great vps thats only like $6.50 a month for good specs but if you need cpanel they wants $17 a month extra. I pay $15 a month extra now for cpanel at hostwinds.. I don't like paying. Not only for cpanel but for most things. When i log in here at BHW the first thing I see is the giveaway section.

I have tons of google alerts set for site:website.com "free"

So is anyone using a cpanel free alternative? If so which one? What do you think about it?

DirectAdmin works ok, so does Kloxo which is free. There are several others as well. Kloxo is real easy to use, offers all the features you need too!

you can just host a site raw on centos server with no panel management? Ii didn't know that. How hard is it to do?

You don't have to type in commands, but a web based GUI like cpanel is pretty useless in terms of what they are expecting you to pay for it. They are preying on people who aren't able to bookmark directions, otherwise learn how to do things without just clicking, or simply those who have money to invest\risk but don't care about how to do it because they afford it because there ass isn't directly on the line.

If you ask details here without providing your niche\url, or any potential competitors' more times than not you'll get a shit load of advice and hyperlinks of how to do it step by step.

Worst case scenario you'll be asked for more info like I just did so someone can help you out. Cpanel can be useful for sure, it's a easy point and click, but for over $150 a year (USD??), there's so much more you could profit in by taking your time to do it yourself and reinvest it in what you're doing.

ISPConfig works pretty well and has nice written tutorial on howtoforge...

there is a learning curve to it but overall no it is not that difficult.

i found webmin pretty cool

I agree with what you say and even cursed cpanel on their facebook page at one point. $150 a year is steep for what that program does. Think about the monthly programs you find here on bhw and all the work they do? Doesn't compare.

Directadmin does have a lifetime license so it is a LOT cheaper in the long term. Got mine through a friend was less than 100.

The problem comes if your selling space vs using it yourself. Cpanel is the defacto standard and its what people expect to have. It is really overpriced but they assume they are the only game in town!

cPanel is not only pricey but also consume much memory source too. Bare commands are great but need abit learning curve. The free one that I've ever used is Kloxo & much cheaper one is DirectAdmin for the lifetime license personal usage.

Another vote goes to Webmin. I'm using it right now and it's just fine for a free alternative.

Do it properly by hand - GUI like cPanel will only let you do so much and the free panels, except possibly webmin, I wouldn't touch with a barge pole. If its free why would people pour hours of work in for nothing. If they do then give up to do something better with life you are then left with a security risk.

Hell, you get security problems with cPanel - I have just read a handful of vulnerabilities that have just been patched by them so even the big boys mess up sometimes.

Get your head round the basics of doing it from command line and you are sorted - I have now got to the point where I run a script to set up new virtual hosts and create all the directory structures for new sites etc.

You will be happier in the end

Another thread about someone trying to save on hosting, pinching nickels and dimes. I was one of these guys about 10 years ago. After losing tons of work repeatedly to hackers, bad hosts and lack of automated backups I finally realized the value of good hosting. Hosting that runs a suite of security tools and doesn't do a backup once a week or once a month but does backups every day with 7 stored backups on every website at any time. I built my own web hosting business.

I haven't had a website hacked in over 3 years and even if some hacker is successful at bypassing all my security, it's a 10 min job to restore a backup from last night or the night before or night before (I rotate 7 a week).

The best money you can spend in IM is in good hosting. I speak from experience suffering repeated drama from website hacks to a complete dedicated server takeover (from a large "managed" hosting provider) losing almost 40 websites because of their incompetence!

Get good hosting and pay for it. Taking shortcuts and pinching pennies on webhosting will only cost you tons more in the end. What is your time worth? How much time do you invest in your websites? When I lose a website it's hundreds of dollars (thousands sometimes) of my time. Time is money and repeating work because you're trying to save $15 a month is nothing short of silly.

Is 1 Cpanel for one hosting plan enough for managing 4-5 Websites ??

Hey thanks for coming in to take a dump on my question. I appreciate it.

What you don't know is I currently have a vps from a well regarded and recommended hosting provider here on bhw and I still have had those issues. I had them on shared hosting everything I have tried. So if I am going to have these issues no matter where I take my money why not save a couple bucks I can dedicate towards something that makes money? I don't see that there is anything wrong with wanting the best value for my dollar. If you do? Well.. like thats just your opinion right man?

LMAO you ask for advice and have a girly hissy fit when someone gives you the best advice that you will have for a long time about hosting. Personally I ran two hosting businesses over 7 years until the likes of Godaddy etc starting pandering to the penny pinchers and giving them everything for a buck. Luckily I sold up and got out at the right time.

Telling me to go sit on it because I agreed with kvmcable, priceless sunshine, absolutely priceless.

If you value your 'IM career', then as 99% of it will be online it is blazingly obvious that the bedrock of your business should be rock solid. If you don't want to fork out 15 bucks for cPanel so you can sit there one clicking your way to success then plan to spend plenty of time saving up to pay a specialist to dig you out the shit when your freebie cheap ass hosting panel goes tits up and lets every script kiddie and their dog rape the ass from your VPS.

You ask for opinions, people gave it - if you don't want to hear advice from the likes of people like kvmcable don't ask questions.

Personally I still don't feel safe using a VPS or a dedicated server that I rent from a provider or data centre, I back those things up like there is no tomorrow to my hard drives at home and then mirror them. But thats the best I can do at the moment.
