So I am helping a local business out with their local SEO. Their website is very clean but has a semi-low pa da so i can definitely help improve this. My question is, is it possible to rank for local keywords such as [city name] [product/service] without actually having them on the website. The site looks very nice and neat and i dont want to screw it up by putting all sorts of content on the home page. Is it possible to just build high quality links with anchor texts being [city name] [product] and rank for them that way? I was also thinking I could make sub pages with good quality content on them BUT, if I dont make it linkable from the domain/ home page will it even help? Basically hidden pages to help rank with KW's.

The last thing I was thinking was to buy an expired domain rebuild it and do some sort of redirect. Just dont know how I would do this, if you could help please feel free!

Thanks guys

i'm not a pro by any means.... but can't you just create some pages with good onpage seo to target those keywords you want to rank for? and then just blast them with backlinks? slowly they will rank...? again, i am completely new here and a total noob who has made $0 from internet marketing so someone please correct me if i'm wrong.

I absolutely could do that but what I was saying is her website is very clean and sleek for her purposes and I didn't want to have to add any extra pages to it.

Basically what I was asking is if it is possible to rank very low competition keywords just through anchor text of inbound external backlinks.

is there any content? articles? rewrite the articles to try and target the keywords? again im a noob... if there is no content then thats your answer as to why it's not ranking for those keywords lol

Yes you can build some manual tier 1 links targeting exact match anchor text to the home page.

As for the hidden pages you could definitely also do that too in order to target way more keywords. Once you start building backlinks to them they will show up in Google.

You should definitely do the expired domain redirect. That's something I would do in your situation. Very low risk and gives a good boost.

You can even go slightly more black hat and build backlinks to your expired domain to power it up, as well as 301 URL shorteners.

I have another idea. You could try and rank some videos for the terms you want and create a link to the main page through the videos. You would try to rank multiple videos for a few related keyword phrases.

Example if your client is doing photography in New York you could have videos for

New York photography
Queens New York photography
Brooklyn New York photography
Etc

Just an idea from a noob. If you try it and it works do give thanks

If you are unsure create backlinks to the site, you just play backlinks pyramid, so that the link to the main site can be deleted at any time if the site ranked hurt

It can be done that way. As long as the site is related to the niche.

i think that its all mainly about the content of the pages...you can use Primary related keywords(Words and phrases that relate to the main keyword phrase.) Secondary related keywords( Words and phrases that relate to the primary related keywords.) and Entity relationships(Concept that describe the properties and relationships between people, places, and things.) in order to make your site local SEO without using the targeted phrase.
like.... White house >> President >> secret service etc..
its importent to say I only know the basics. :)

That's definitely the first thing I'd do. You can rank a page with just anchor texts, I've even bought expired domains that still ranked because of the anchors.
I was also thinking I could make sub pages with good quality content on them BUT, if I dont make it linkable from the domain/ home page will it even help? Basically hidden pages to help rank with KW's.
I've used this technique with great succes! You can go two ways with this; either fully optimize the hidden pages themselves to get them to rank or just have some quality non targeted content (you don't want your rankings to compete) to use for internal linking to your homepage or whatever page you want to rank. Make sure to use targeted anchors here as well.
The last thing I was thinking was to buy an expired domain rebuild it and do some sort of redirect.
Regarding a 301, I'd look for a domain that has anchor texts similar to what you're trying to rank for and then redirect the entire domain / the pages that those anchors are pointing at to your client's site. There are tons of guides here on how to do 301s.
