I'm having trouble understanding how certain competetion analysis indicators relate to the actual difficulty of ranking a page for a keyword..

How hard would it be to rank for a keyword with EMD against 1st page competition of mainly PR3 sites with little onpage SEO done for the keyword. Half have 0 backlinks to the page, backlinks to the site are 65k to (+infinity), two sites have in total tens of thousands of backlinks, the rest - different orders of millions. One of the competitors is Amazon. The search volume is 18k

Mods: Sorry, this probably belongs to the SEO section :\

I can't say for certain on this keyword, I don't know your backlinking ability / experience or tools. And, if this is a brand keywords (i.e. xbox controllers) that makes a difference too.

I will tell you to take the information that TT gives you with a grain of salt, as I've had it say keywords were relatively easy, then if you check it again in a month it says extremely difficult.

You should check out this thread for a great (and easy) way to check a potential keyword:

    Code:
    http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/white-hat-seo/266300-method-step-step-keyword-research-newbies.html
And, if possible, run it through a few other keyword checkers.

    Hope this helps!

    Shit easy and okayish.
If the BLS wasn't like that. The first two and the second two are the same sites, and probably have a huge domain authority.
Wait. Is it a gaming keyword? I've seen a couple with competition like that.

Yeah, that's one of the first threads I read on kw research and that's why I got TT :p But thanks anyway. I also read BSB's thread and a bunch of others, lol. Anyway, isn't including a brandname in your domain an extremely bad idea? Like one that can get you sued for hundreds of thousands of $?

    @Corrupt

No, it has nothing to do with gaming :p

If this keyword is too saturated with links, then move on to another keyword that is close to what you want to rank in, that your website is about.

As for your other question, brandname in your domain name can be a good thing, if it makes sense. And no, you can`t get sued. If this was the case, everyone will be getting sued.

    Example: Marketing is my keyword

www. SmartMarketing(dot)com this can be your website, and google ads more weight due the keyword being used.

A couple quick things to consider:

    1 - Is page one mainly domains (i.e. widgits.com, best widgets.org) or pages (billyjohnson.com/widgets-are-cool)?

2 - Any authority sites (other then Amazon) on the first page (i.e. wikipedia, high pr 2.0 sites)?

Your first keyword COULD be promising, but it's hard to tell without really knowing what it is, and I wouldn't want to tell you to pull the trigger and buy it, spend weeks & spend money to try to rank it if it's not at least 75% odds in your favor.
