Could backlinking drop my ranking?

I've been trying to rank for 5 different long tail key word phrases, I had 3 on the front page one on the 2nd page and one on the 3rd. I get home and my page had no conversions. I look up my SERP and I have moved to spots: 172, 332, 370....WTF.

I look up my backlinks and they have swelled from 74 to 549, mostly from 2 blogs. Obviously this has caused my drop. The blacklinks show these two blogs over and over for various pages within the blog.

Should I continue to create links, write articles, etc - or should I leave it alone for awhile. Any advice would be great because I used the same 2 blogs to back link 4 more sites that will inevitably fall to the same fate.

It's currently doing the G dance, best advice I could give is not to check your rankings and backlinks everyday. But focus more on acquiring links and posting useful contents

check your positions weekly - it's a waste of time to do more often

yes Pe,

that's the G magic, dancing up and down, then later on, few weeks later, you will notice a big jumped in ranking, n then viola! :D

G gets so crazy on rankings it's insanity to keep checking rankings. Just build, back link and move on. I check my traffic logs daily and try to judge my success on traffic spikes and monthly charts to see how my traffic is doing. Save your self some headaches and try not to figure it out.

I'm going to take your advise on this one guys. I have been totally obsessed with page ranking, back links etc. for weeks. Believe it or not, I'm less stressed knowing that I'm so far out, then I was when I was on page 2 & 3. I will still do my SEO work and have faith in my niche finding skills and know that I should be ranking again shortly.

You guys have talked me down off the ledge. :)
