Backlinks are some type of ranking method for Google. Usually they present a link to your website on another website.
Those "links to your website on another website" can be:
Forum profiles with your link in the signature
Comments on blogs with your backlink as a name or in the comment
Articles on sites with a contextual link
Scrapebox let's you automate commenting on blogs, which means that manually you can comment on around 100 blogs per day, but with scrapebox you can comment on around 1 000 000 a day.

On #1 - ScrapeBox is like a Swiss Army knife; it can do a hell of a lot of things with all its addons. It's prime directive originally was to scrape relevant web sites and mass post comments to them, but over time it has grown into a beautiful monster of an app (PR checker, TDNAM scraper, goog image scraper, whois scraper, et cetera). I'd suggest you start with looking through the official tutorials and loopline's youtube channel. Then do some testing of things you've learned from those and you're ready for the next level of learning.
On #2 - backlinks are links on a site to another site; one of the goals is to make your content look more popular around the web. The backlinks could be links to a parasite such as an article you have posted on squidoo, or a tweet, et cetera, or could be a direct backlink to your site. Plenty more to read about these topics around here. Key topics for you to be aware of are link diversity (having a number of methods for creating backlinks and a number of backlink sources); link velocity (the rate at which you build backlinks - you don't want to suddenly build a million backlinks one week then stop altogether, slow, steady, ever increasing over time); and don't over-link directly back to your own sites.
On #3 - I have no clue, why don't you ask your friend to be a bit more specific. Some people hear a phrase like "internet marketing" and think you can automagically build them a facebook or something.

Database is probably referring to a website database. Basically a table that stores and holds values. Unless he means something like an e-mail list or something, but it would be the wrong use of the name. Really you have to elaborate what he means to give a right answer.

No net necessarily. It has a number of uses and add-ons. You could use it solely for whitehat purposes, solely for blackhat purposes, or any mix thereof.

The more powerful and versatile a tool is the more uses you can come up with for it. Scrapebox is a extremely powerful tool with all its addons, it's up to the user to put it to good use.
