Costly PPC Mistakes & Lessons

forgot to set a daily cap once and burned $500 in 2 hours, never again.

I ignored search terms and placement reports when I first started scaling campaigns. Budget went up, but so did wasted spend on irrelevant clicks. Big lesson learned: optimization doesn’t stop after launch — you have to keep cutting waste and refining targeting if you want scaling to actually be profitable.

Set a campaign live without proper geo/device limits — blew budget in hours. Lesson: triple-check targeting before hitting Enable.

Relying on Google’s display expansion in search campaigns can drain your budget fast, dumping spend into low-quality, bot-driven junk traffic.

spent way too much on broad match keywords once, never again lol. always use phrase or exact match.

One PPC mistake that cost me real money was trusting Google’s “display expansion” on a search campaign without enough oversight. I assumed the automation would stick close to search intent, but over a short period it spent heavily on low-quality placements that didn’t convert.

The lesson I learned is to never rely blindly on automated expansions. Always review placement settings, set tighter controls, and monitor campaigns daily—especially when testing anything new.

i once forgot to turn off search partners on a high cpc finance campaign and burned $2k on junk clicks in one weekend. now i always double check the network settings before hitting launch because those "partner" sites are just bot farms.

Probably accepting google reccomendations without even knowing what the f is going on

Me too bro. I forgot to turn off the Display Network and Partner Network in my search campaign. As a result, my budget was depleted twice as fast without any orders being placed, and I spent the whole day figuring out why. This happened when I first started using PPC.

Blew budget by running broad match with no negatives learned to tighten targeting & add negatives early.

What I learned is that this thread is full of comments owned by the same person and farming their accounts here

Scaled a campaign too fast after early profits, CPA exploded and wiped margins, learned to scale gradually and watch stability metrics.
