I don't believe that it's possible to work as a copywriter without a specialized swipe file and deep knowledge about the subject or even having business experience with it. I don't think that you can research such a thing in a small amount of time unless you have experts who work with you or you resell.

I have sold multiple expensive products online where I made the copy myself. I learned a lot by interacting with the customers which improved my copy. I don't think I would be able to find what the people want to read without doing business. Honestly, I don't even think that you have to be a good writer. You can be the worst writer ever but if the customers see what they want to see then they will buy. I have never failed to sell a product where I knew the best platforms to use and I had knowledge the audience. Most of the products were on the 100-300e range.

One my friends went to work as a seller for an electronics shop and they forced him to complete an extremely tough test about electronics that he didn't manage to pass. His job was selling by talking. Copywriting is still selling but you use text instead of talking, so it shouldn't be any different.

Why some treat copywriting as a generalist skill? They must have some sort of research hacks. I wonder how long it takes to gather a specialized swipe file and info. The general swipe files that people use don't help much.

Copy writing isn't a general skill.

It is a specialised one.

Not sure what makes you think people assume it is.

Using the art of word to sell or convince isn't easy.

I mean it is niche bound.

Yes there are some fundamentals that apply everywhere but you can't do anything without subject specialization and an appropriate swipe file.

Well, generally speaking it is niche based as well.

Some people are great at writing copy for cars.

Some people for minimalist design and art.

What I think is that most who end up doing copywriting are people who didn't have a shot on a specific business or they retired from it (e.g. selling cars) and found a different way to enter into the industry.

I always though of it as a general skill as well, but now when I think about it, it really is niche based.
