Content?

Hi everyone,

My brother has a small local electrician business and he wants me to build him a website and to try and get it ranked in the search engines.

Now I know that fresh new content is important for this, but with this type of website its going to be difficult to add a lot of new content on a regular basis.

What I intend to do to get around this is to get 3-5 good articles written and spin them using Matthew Woodwards technique (thanks for the vids Matt, they're amazing). Then I intend to add 3-5 articles per week to the site, but to have them in background pages that will not be linked to from anywhere on the site, so that site visitors wont be able to get to them (hope this makes sense).

My question is - will the search engines still count these articles as new unique content even though there will be no links on the site pointing towards them?

Good questions here. I'm not sure if you will be directly penalized for that but it may make your site look lower quality if you have pages that are islands and not connected to anything.

Is there a reason you don't just start a blog and write a couple of posts a week on it? Seems like you could come up with some content like tutorials on how to do simple electrical tasks. If you don't want to go to all that effort, you can still rank well in search. Keep in mind that there are many factors that cause sites to rank well. Adding more content and being useful are some of those but there are many others that you can focus on.

Have a static home page and then blog then blog whenever you feel like. It doesn't take up to $10 to get a good content of 500 words.

You're reading too much of MOZ and MaCu blog

it's not a surprise, because there some niches, where you can't generate new fresh content and google knows it
but if I'm creating a site like that - I'm also creating a blog in the folder, and post any related posts, sure unique

If your brother is a legitimate expert in the field, mate, I'd personally be sitting down with him and picking his brain for a list of potential blog/How To-style posts.

Depending on the volume and competition of the keywords you're trying to target you mightn't need to go to the lengths of spinning content.

If I were in your position I'd personally start out doing things white-hat for a while and just writing some genuinely useful and helpful content. Not because I think Blackhat won't work or anything like that, but there's always a chance that you mightn't even need to go to those lengths.

You will not out rank local business doing this if they are doing proper local SEO. You will be much better off actually building him a real small business website instead of building him a spammy marketing site.

If you build some half assed website,it will reflect poorly on him as a professional. Using spun content on a small business site is suicide for that small business. You do not promote a small business website like an IM site, not if you want the benefit of the local algo.

Don't you realize that his customers are going to read the site? Quality content is what you need, or you will hurt his conversions.

You can build a quality site for a lot less effort than a crappy site.

As a business person, he should realize that anything less than as good as his competition is waste of time.

He should be able to get a nice 5 page static site built for less than $500.

BTW, you are completely wrong that there is little you can write or blog about in such a site.

How to find a weak breaker.
What to expect when hiring an electrical contractor.
5 hints you should hire a contractor.
5 warnings you should watch for when hiring an electrician.
Electrical problems, repair or replace?
How to save energy in your home.
Understanding fuses and breakers.
Is your service providing enough power for your needs?
Adding additional electrical outlets to an existing home.
How to run electricity to an outside storage building.(pool) (garage) (barn)
Outside lighting, underground, or overhead?
Can your electrical wiring interfere with your internet service?
10 easy electricity savings for the home.
Meet the staff of XXX electrical.

The list is quite inexhaustible. Not only that, but you can set up google alerts to get notified when news happens in your town or niche, and use these for inspiration.

I second this. Keyword research is necessary for you to rank in the search engines. Any useful content will help you gain site credibility. You can even make use the advantage of social media sites to promote your helpful contents.

This is why I love this site, numerous fast answers with great ideas.

I'll tell you what works excellent on sites like that - useful tools like calculators etc. eg. A tool where you can list your appliances and it works out how many Kw/hrs you're using etc. A costing tool to roughly 'price up' re-wiring jobs based on variables such as house size / job type etc. You see this often on DIY sites where they have a tool to work out how much wood / concrete / etc. is required. As well as "How to" articles / blog, this is the sort of content that will serve well for SEO purposes in this instance. It's pure WH and it should be in this case.

The good thing with these sorts of tools is you can use them as a pre-sell / upsell if you do it right.
