Content Writing : HowTo?

I have been reading about content writing, for individuals and their blogs, and thought that might be something I would be good at doing.

I am a native American speaker with excellent grammar and typing skills.
I have written well my entire life and would like to put it to use in producing some kind of income if at all possible.

Now, my question is... How would I get started in that field?
Any suggestions?

You can try Fiverr, Elance or Odesk. Another option is to try to sell your service here on the forum (BHW marketplace). I think many people appreciate quality articles without grammatical errors.

Fiverr seems to be flooded with writers and sites like eLance and oDesk have really low rates I have gathered.
I was wondering if it was possible to get individual clients, and how easy it was to do so.
 
First you need a portfolio, you might offer some free articles to reputed people here and if they like, they can tell people or order more
 
You've got to start somewhere even if it's offering cheap articles to get you started.
You could try digitalpoint too.
That way you can build up a portfolio.
Maybe set up a website where you can put some samples.
I do a bit of content writing myself. I'm UK based and I found that people on a forum that I use (related to web development) wanted articles. So I was able to do them.
In fact today just had a bit of repeat business.
 
My content generator algorithm writes comical, but poor quality articles. Sometimes it's gramatical errors are really funny, but do you think poor quality content might be better for PPC? because people will visit the page, realize the article is bad and want to click something, maybe an ad?
 
At risk of sounding like I'm shilling my own thread, I actually wrote about 4,000 words on exactly this last Sunday. I can't post links but check my post history for 'A Retrospective Journey' where I go through exactly what I did.

In summary, sites like Elance and ODesk do have low rates to start with, but a little reputation and a professional pitch go a long way. Not every buyer on those sites is looking for quick, easy and cheap. If your skills are up to it you can make a decent amount of cash. As I cover in that post, my main client right now started off as a Freelancer 1c per word guy - he's now paying more than three times that and I write for him almost exclusively for $100-$200 a day.

Collect the email address of 500+ SEO firms (Get ones located in US, Canada, UK, Australasia, run by people with English-sounding names - not being racist, but always avoid Indian/Filipino/Pakistan companies as they are used to sweatshop content production) by searching Google city by city (SEO company + [populated city]) and email them one after the other saying you are a content writer from the US offering articles at $15 per 500 words. Keep a record of each firm you email and follow up with all those who do not respond. Then do another 500. Then do 500 web design companies. Then outsource all your content writing jobs (you will get lots if your email is well-written) on the WAHM forum for $8 each and edit them, or just write it all yourself.
 
If you want to be a seo article writer, know about LSI writing and how to fit in the relevant keywords into your writing, charge slightly cheaper for a 500 word article and I am sure people will come flocking to you. But of course credibility and repute is key if you are doing it here on bhw

You can also write for your own blog. What are your topics of interest? Maybe you could start a blog, write some good content, do some SEO, rank your posts and make some money from them. Just an idea...

Look for people who are buying content and offer them some of your writings for free. Ask them to pay only if they are happy with the first few articles, and most people will be willing to continue to work with you after that if your price is reasonable.
 
Yeah, you can really go far, all you need to do is make it high quality and then put time and effort in.
 
To get started, you should build an online portfolio. If you do not want elance and odesk, you could email blog owners and tell them about your writing services. Also send them the link of your online portfolio. You could also try looking for clients in craigslist.
 
I do high quality article writing for clients in both the mainstream and adult world, and it's all about quality and service. Don't spin content, don't oversell your clients, and offer quality work. Then they'll come back for more and want your work. Takes time though.
 
Choose a niche that you feel you can be very useful. This will make writing a bit easier for you. Write about things you have experiences and you are knowledgeable about.

I second this notion, it is extremely easy to setup an ODesk account too although there is a lot of competition as there always is being a freelance writer. I would certainly check out fiverr as well as seoclerks, both of these websites are excellent!
