Hey guys.

So I put together a team of 8 people who want to write for me. They are just normal people that I am friends with on facebook. I want to setup a for sale thread but not sure what to call them.

Are they bloggers or content writers or copywriters? I had a argument with someone who is a copywriter and he was upset that I didnt want to charge outrageous prices that he is used to getting which was around $10 per 100 words. I told him its because he is a copywriter and these people will be doing more blogging and content writing.

What would you consider these people? They are just normal joe shmoes who want to write for me.

They're content writers.

I'd be careful with hiring friends.

I would suggest that you start with a couple of people and scale it from there. I can promise starting with a team of 8 friends is gonna be a nightmare when they flake or find assignments too hard to do.

They are content writers, as bigfoot said!
I would also advice you to hire experienced writers, or you will loose more that you will earn!
10$ for 100 words is too costly, it should be like 1$-3$ per 100 words! Good luck!

yea I agree $10 per 100 is too much but he is a professional writer.. so he is in a different market.

Everyone involved is more than happy to receive $1 per 100 words so I was going to charge $2 per 100.

I figured it would be good for people who want blog content.

$10 is too much, but $1-3 is too low.
Yes, you can find people that will love to do it for that price, but there is also a reason why.
They don't charge me because they can't.

Quality is key; don't go the bargain route at quality's expense.

THis is a hard one. My VA (Su) uses speech to texty and has a BA in English (as a foreign language) Her standard of writing is excellent, with speech to text she can easily write 25 x 1000 articles a day for 20-22 days a month for which I pay $500 a month based on a 13 month year (if you have a Malaysian VA you will know why this is)

It is absolutely excellent copy, always well researched, spot on spelling add grammar - virtually faultless

500,000 words for $500 or 1000 words per dollar. But it costs a lot of time and cash up front to set up.

(In case you are worried about exploitation, $6,500 a year is 60% more than the average wage in her community that is about $4000 per year. I also bought her PC which she can use for her own purposes, her speech to text set up and provided 30 days training - but all the same, paying $10 per 100 words would be paying 100x more than I am paying now, and there is no way on this earth the quality could be any better than Su provides.

Your content writing team.

I like your approach. I think it will work well with someone new to article writing (e.g. a fresh graduate), by offering training and equipment.

But once trained, some may say it's a matter of time before they see what the market rates are and go to where the grass is greener.

I recently trained someone for a few weeks, offering around 6x what you're offering (I didn't offer the equipment that you did). Know where she is now? Working for a publishing company on double the money.

Sourcing writers can be tricky. I've come across a lot of the freelancer writers who claim to be available full time, but are actually working for multiple clients without telling you.

If you find a good one, don't let them go as they're worth their weight in gold and offer good incentives!

make sure that you're keeping an eye on them! you don't to start a business and lose contracts because they won't deliver. as someone said earlier, it's better to start with 2-3 and go from there. if they are good, they you can hire 2-3 and the other can keep an eye on them

well like I said they are all people I know.

All of the "article writing" Ive seen sold on BHW is from people over seas and its all spun. These people just want to blog and get paid for it. So I think its a win win situation for everyone. You get solid blog or content writing done by people in the USA that are of the age 30+

guaranteed to be original content.

Ill label them as "content writers"

Thanks everyone.!. Im going to look into a BST.

would anyone be interested in this BST?

Ouch, that's not good. $6000 a month would put Su as the most wealthy person in her area - by some considerable distance. Her 1 bed apartment costs her $180 per month, she could become a super landlord and sublet a couple of floors of her building if she earned $1500.

Anything over $30,000 per annum and I'd just employ a local graduate and site him or her in my office, no point going to Malaysia or Polynesia if you are paying over $2000 per month - that's European rates. I could hire an English student straight out of a decent local university for less than that (cash in hand...ahem)

For the couple of years I've used here I've never been late paying, and have sometimes given her an extra $50-$100 if she has worked particularly hard in a month (i.e when I make changes and she needs to research new topics etc)

$6500 - $7000 direct to her account put her in the top 10% of earners, and the work is regular. She gets 2 days off a week and rarely works more than 8.5 hours a day. The PC is basic and most of the functionality is on a server.

If you go through an agency, well so I've heard, some pay the actual worker only 50-60% of the amount the client pays. So you might see a VA for $800 - $1000 per month on Odesk or one of those "refer a VA" services - and in fact they get LESS than $500 of that themselves and are expected to work for multiple clients and have little or no job security and are required to train themselves (or get ditched by clients quickly).

Su has been paid regularly for years, has her holidays, weekends and bonuses. She gets her 13th month in full and retraining - updated equipment is all part of the deal.
She has candidly asked me several times if I have work for others who want it, but I don't have the time to train new workers and cannot spare Su for the 30 days it would need to do it properly. At least not yet, but maybe next year that will change and I might up to 3 VA's at some point as I expand from my current 6 big websites to maybe 15 or 20. Several had nice PR increases 48 hours ago and Google seems to love really big websites with millions of unique words of content, so that's what I'm feeding it. Getting a new website past the million unique word point takes some time, essp if you want a couple of hundred videos and maybe 2000 images in that, but with 3 VA's rather than one I should be able to push a site out every month to that point

I think the perception in Malaysia is that my side of the fence IS the greener grass compared with working in sweat shop environments with no job security and "the man" taking a 50% cut of the clients payments. :) But there is always the possibility of getting staff poached. When I was a project planner "back in the day" I got poached myself more than once. (Wish I'd never left Bosch though - well not to work for the other jokers I worked for - glad I'm self employed now of course)

Yes you can label them as "content writers"... But the first thing I would do before I even started is send the $10.00 for 100 words guy down the road... Save yourself a lot of headaches from the start...

he is a friend and he just happen to see my facebook post inquiring about hiring content writers. He was insulted at the price I put up. He does write for a living but for big tech blogs and he does get $10-$20 per 100 words. Although he is educated in the things he writes about. The random people / friends I have write for me are all educated but might not be a professional in the stuff I ask them to write about. Its mainly just blog posts and random content about subjects. It sure beats spun crap.

Your level of experience will determine how much you are paid.
It is possible to earn $ 10 per 100 words. I am surprised that people
here think it is too high. Professional writers can earn upto $ 1 per word,
that is why your copywriting friend was insulted by your pricing.

You should also be careful about working with a team of writers,
they can really let you down. I hope you are sure that they can deliver before
you run your offer.

Call them content writers. I am also interested in running a for
sale thread but want to see how yours does first, so keep us updated

Scritty,

How did you find your VA in the first place? Did you post an ad on university job board or one of those craigslist type of websites targeting Malaysians?
