I'm looking for a content/project management tool where i can do the following:

- Add new clients to it (They each have a user and password to login)
- The ability to upload files so each client can download reports and screenshots etc.
- Post milestones or to be completed notes

I've looked into basecamp but its not cheap each month , I also checked out some Scripts on code canyon (PHP) but i've yet to come across something useful.

So i hope someone can recommend me a tool.

Try http://www.freedcamp.com the free alternative to Basecamp. Works well and has the functions you want.

I've tried A LOT of different services and Redmine is the one for me. Basecamp is good for customers because it's simple, but Redmine has a lot of advanced features and it's fee, too.

There are a lot of these scripts. Some paid. Some free. Many both. Does it have to be PHP?

There's Tracks, but its for Rails.

That's just a few of the ones that are available to download and install, and self host. There are a few more. For each one of the above, do a google search for <appname>+alternatives. There are a few small reviews, but nothing definitive.

I started looking for something similar, but got bored. Options paralysis.

Hey,

It is a little out of the subject as it doesn't respect your requirement, but there is a method i studied in a business school which allow you to divide a project into tasks and critical tasks in order to be able to calculate a delay.

Gantt Diagramm

For simple project it is basicaly useless, but for more complicated one you cannot do without it.
