ive been making some posts, getting some information from the sites on the first page of google. and there will at least 3 or 4 sites with the same copied text, not like an article, but like 2 or 3 pieces of content, over 200 words at least and more. and a lot of sites have all the specifications for a product just copied

not that im thinking about copying anything, but these are like major sites on the first page, how does google allow that and they still stay ranked

I am comparing this to eCommerce where it is often similar - product descriptions are the same for all products, and yet they still all rank. I guess its the same sort of thing.

Having said that, I have had great results with eCommerce sites when i took the time to make unique and lengthy product descriptions even though everyone else was just doing copy and paste, so don't copy that tactic just because it appears to be working for others.

Ever heard of authority? For commercial terms, due to their nature, authority plays a much bigger role than content relevance. If those sites have the "right" links, they can get away with duplicated content or even no content at all.

This.

I work in the ecommerce space in the UK and major department stores with a huge number of links and massive authority will easily outrank an independent store that has a well optimised and content rich category page - even when that major store has a page with zero content.

This is my area of expertise. I can tell you first hand that duplicate content on e-commerce sites don't matter. AND it has nothing to do with authority because my site was brand new. Granted, if I took the time to write unique content for each product description, I would have probably ranked even higher. I think Google's algorithm treats e-commerce sites differently. It wouldn't make sense to penalize duplicate content for e-commerce sites because the majority of stores uses copy from the manufacturer.

Google doesn’t care about duplicate content if you add to it.

Just like quotations etc.

It’s more about what value you would add if the duplicate content was removed.

You do realize that when you add extra content to duplicated content, it's no longer called duplicated right? (if the extra content is unique of course). And hence why Google "doesn't care" about it, because it's NO longer duplicated content. When I say duplicated content, I mean content that is almost 100% the same or close to that, which is common for most e-commerce stores. If your content contains a few quotes, but you explain the quotes with your own unique words (or whatever kind of content you want to add along with the quotes), that is not duplicated content, which is why Google doesn't care. You don't need a Google employee to tell you that.

If this your stance holds for e-commerce, can we also imply that duplication rule do not hold for news website?
My reason is that most news website most times copy from if not one source I may say very few sources and we have many websites copying it (them)

I still believe that duplicate content can affect your rankings whatever niche you may be in. Do a little re-writing, just to avoid getting detected and getting penalized. It's not that difficult. You can also have Copyscape to verify whether you're dealing with duplicate content or not.
