With 48 backlinks, my site is on the first page (2nd place) for a 5,910,000 result keyword with quotes around it.. this just proves content is more valuable than backlinks.. anyone disagrees?

I disagree. Quality content > crappy backlinks but quality backlinks are far superior than content imo. It's far easier to get ranked with great backlinks than it is with great content. But then again all we can do is give our opinion. It's kinda like the which came first, the chicken or the egg?

Why not have great content and backlinks?

You can't go wrong if you do both... especially if you have a program like xrumer or scrapebox that can automatically get your website backlinks for you.

You need both... One without the other is a 0 traffic website.

Backlinks build your "credibility" and content controls how efficiently you spend it in the SERPs. People often accuse me of being anti-linkbuilding, but I'm not. There is plenty of great linkbuilding posts. There is very little content tuning posts that are backed with empirical measurements. Most content tuning posts are in fact people just making things up. (I say that in the context of the web) Most white hat content posts are rehashes of the same very dated wisdom or totally made up religious beliefs. I focus on content posts in BHW because thats where the most work is clearly needed.

Content without Backlinks = Death of a Website

Backlinks are a little better as comparison with content, I know a blog with only 1 post but with good backlinks and has achieved PR2. It is a test blog, to see what is more important, content or backlinks.

    It's a subtle balance between 3 factors:

    1. The relevancy of your content
    2. The power of your backlinks
    3. The resistance level of the keyword

If you have 1 and 2 at a high level, you may still not be able to break through into a high rank if 3 is too high.

Really, 3 is everything. For obscure queries, Google uses fewer filters. For high competition queries, Google may use any number of filters, such as requiring a higher "authority" score.

Congrats on getting a #1 spot. Content is important but backlinks are by far the most important factor for ranking a page.

Also, the number of search results for a given term does NOT matter. People post this number all the time and keyword research tools state them as well but they simply don't matter.

What matters is how strong (domain age, content quality, number and quality of backlinks) the competing pages are.

Saying I got #1 for a term with a billion search results means nothing. Saying I got #1 for a term with very strong competing pages is significant. If the other pages are weak, it's like saying you won a million man race where all the runners but you had no legs.

Backlinks are far more important. Try to rank on competetive keyword using only great content. It could be written by person who won Noble prize in Literature but it doesn't matter for Google!

Content and backlinks are both important and also other aspects of SEO... You can't go crappy with like them and get a stable ranking in 1st page not to mention of rank 1.

Also with "" as trophaeum suggested you just found a low competiton and highly targeted keyword... So don't pass a verdict that "something is more important then other"

The keyword is highly competitive, believe me, many of my other sites have a lot of content and lack backlinks. I am never good at link building but somehow always achieve 1st or 2nd page. I create profiles and blog comment for links, only see less than 100 in any backlink checker tools. Never had more backlinks than 100.

Google loves content more than backlinks with my experience on multiple wordpress sites. However, I do believe backlinks is somewhat equal to content in importance, if I was only good in link building, I would get much better results. Anyone recommend any free tools for links?
