Contabo often fails me, best alternative?

I have a contable VPS-M plan which has 6 vCPU Cores, 16 GB RAM, or 400 GB SSD, 32 TB Traffic for only 10.49 EURO - all cool right? but the problem is i often get a cloudflare message that says "Error 521 - Web server is down", which is really odd because my wordpress blog didn't even touched near those numbers (cpu cores/ram).

My wordpress website is only getting 10k to 15k daily unique visits, and around 20 - 30 concurrent visitors.

I'm planning to transfer to another VPS providers please recommend one, as I have trouble finding those spec with near pricing as contabo on other providers. Or lets forget the spec and pricing, please recommend that can handle those traffic without spending too much for overpowered vps.

You can try Hetzner. They have slightly more expensive plans than Contabo but I have had no problems with them for the past year or so. Try them and see if it works for you. Also, don't use Apache webserver, cPanel and any garbage that comes with it. You can go with Nginx or Lightspeed as they are known to perform better. Nginx is a bit pain to configure but I have heard Lightspeed is better in that regard. Avoid using super bulky themes, use something like Generatepress. Also, avoid using unnecessary plugins or thos plugins that are known to cause performance issues like Elementor. Use a good caching plugin like WP Rocket, W3 Total Cache, or WP Super Cache. With caching plugins you need to do A/B testing to get the best performance out of them. Compress your images too and use lazy loading.

Although I agree with this suggestion partially I don't agree that Apache2 is that bad.
I've been using Apache2 for ages and it' performs well. It's not as good as Nginx nowadays, specially for the absurd amount of plugins available, but if you are confortable with A2 I would simply stick to it.

I had on my list to try Contabo at some point (specially for IP diversity, instead of simply sticking to Hetzner in EU to death as I'm doing now). From what I read from some reviews Contabo seems to be reliable, but sometimes those reviews are biased AF.
 
I think either this is happening because of the lack of caching, or your website has some kind of bug/memory leak. I don’t think changing the server will make it any better.

If I was in your position, the first thing I would do is look at the logs. Don’t just look at the access logs, but check the error logs as well and try to find out what is causing this.

For a long term solution, invest in a better frontend for your wp installation. You could keep the backend running, and use a jamstack framework like next.js in combination with wp api, and make a static frontend. That should take all the loads off and you will be able to serve your visitors easily, with the same hardware.

One thing that I don’t like about your hardware is the number of cores. If you increase that to let’s say 8 cores, it should be a little better. Otherwise the hardware looks good enough.


ps, if you are looking for beefy servers for cheap, look at ovh.co.uk (not affiliated). There’s always some offers running there, and their hardwares are absurdly cheap, specially mid and large sized ones.

Contabo is said to use old hardware hence the cheap prices. Even a $12 cloudways base plan can handle millions if visitors. Go through the web hosting section and you can find some good deals.
 
See the real problem here is that you get some good traffic, and you're buying virtual private servers which use SHARED resources and not dedicated.

You should be looking into buying a dedicated server, where you own all of the resources and none of it is shared.

thanks ordered a dedicated server from Hetzner @ 41 EURO a month
 
didn't now hetzner has such a strict policies for accepting orders, ordered a product with my credit card and even provided my drivers license, few minutes after, I received a rejection notice.

i used alot of hosting brand. i can say that hertzner is the best. you can try hostinger or godaddy and also in here alot of freelance sell hosting you can check on the section. btw what are you hosting?
 
I've been using Contabo for a few years and pay them ~$400-500/month in server fees. They've been reliable and never had issues with them.

Check your configuration.

Use a service such as ploi, serverpilot etc. With a good setup (using one of those services), my vps can handle 100 visits per minute per 1gb with ease.

Then use a stress test service such as Load impact (now https://k6.io/ ) to test your setup.

You can always check VPS logs and see if there's a problem with VPS. Such specs should do just fine with keeping the website up.

Hetzner, webtopia, vdsina, cp.inferno.name - Simpler and cheaper.

Vultr. digitalocean - Expensive and reliable)
