Connect To VPS W FTP?

Hello everyone,

I recently purchased a VPS from Thrustvps.com (big mistake) it came with nothing configured on it whatsoever. I need to transfer files over the the VPS via FTP and after emailing support all they said was "Google it". Wow aren't they helpful pieces of shit. Anyways I'm not a techy person at all and have been spending hours trying to figure out how to set up FTP connection and just cant seem to do it. Anyone know how to do this? I'm completely lost and frustrated at this point

I can help you. Can you tell me what set-up they have? I've never used their service before.
 
First of all change to another provider. I wouldn't spend a dime or a minute more with these idiots.
Second, you can install a free ftp server like filezilla add a user and connect to your VPS with its IP and the username & password you just created.
 
Everything on VPS and dedicated server is done by SSH client (like putty). If you only need to copy your files there you can use FileZilla:

File->Site Manager->New Site.

on "Host" type your VPS ip address, select SFTP server type, add you login details and you are done ;)

I was able to do it using teamviewer which another member recommended. I had tried using filezilla but the connection wasn't working and when I asked support they just kept saying that is outside of our scope of support please use google.
 
Just connect to the IP with your root info and use port 22.
 
so sorry you had to go through a bad experience with a VPS provider. I sent you a message.
 
he was using windows. There is another method via windows rdp. But I recommend that he use teamviewer since it was newb friendly.

For those wondering about the rdp method :

1) Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Remote Desktop Connection

2) Options -> Local Resources (Tab) -> Local devices and resources (Section) -> More... (Button)

3) Check the "Drivers" you want to share.

4) Ok

5) Connect and you should be able to moves files back and forth between each computer.
 
If they are telling you to "Google" it, then you need to move. They need to help you set it up, but then again, you get what you pay for ;)
 
What OS is it running? You will need to setup a FTP server first and then create an FTP account. And then use it to login w/ Filezilla or some other FTP client. For example if your OS is Ubuntu. google this: how to setup ftp account ubuntu
 
I'm using teamviewer and it works great for me. I use it to transfer and even remote control my vps. @OP if you need more help just pm me.

Are you sure that SFTP server type was selected on Filezilla not FTP ?

ya I was trying to do that following youtube videos and i thought i was following the videos correctly but it still wasn't working. once my scapebox license is up to be transfered again i will cancel thrust VPS immediately.

i'm sure to fix this it would take them literally 2 sec since they would obviously know what they are doing, but instead they say google it? i mean cmon, i know im asking noob stuff but a little customer service would be nice
 
try using vsftpd if you're using GNU and if you using a windows try setting the FTP publishing service on IIS (I forgot the exact place)
 
You need to at first clarify what is the VPS type and what have you bought it for - hosting sites or running applications?

If it is Linux VPS, use Filezilla or File Manager for most work. And a Linux VPS should come installed with a control panel and if you not using one being a newbie then you surely need to think of one. A control panel would make it easier for you to manage the VPS. To be honest, managing a Linux server without control panel is NOT THAT EASY and even a person like me who has played with these things for years opt for control panels first.

If it is Windows VPS, use Remote Desktop for the work. It is just another remote computer for you to play and nothing else. It is as easy as managing your own computer.

To be honest, they are a cheap provider and to expect manual help would be a bit unfair from them. You need to learn things yourself too as a webmaster. Google is your best friend in finding the right solutions.

OP u can also try Win SCP - with it you can copy stuff
 
Also if you are using unmanaged VPS you are supposed to manage it yourself, meaning the support will only help if you the server crashesh and is offline or something like that. If you need help from their admins you should order managed VPS. Or you should order cPanel if its running CentOS or Redhat. Another option is to install Virtualmin but its a PITA. Best thing might be to order cPanel its about 10$/month
