Think I recall hearing on the news that the Indian's were boasting (and rightly so) that the cost of getting to mars was less than what it cost to create the US movie 'Gravity'. Lol!

Probably it would be cheaper if they actually send them up in the real space and create the Gravity movie.

It costs INR 450cr($75m) at an average of INR 11.75/km($0.2/km). LOL Less than taxi charges in indian cities. Kudos to ISRO. Things in india sometimes cheaper than china.

A Hollywood budget for blockbuster hit movie funding a cure for cancer wouldn't even surprise me

Oh really? FYI China failed in their mars mission and Indians haven't been collaborating with them for MOM mission.

I can't believe sending probe to Mars is easier than dealing with poverty and crime. It seems so in this case.

That's name of organization (like nasa) , name of probe is "Mangalyaan" Mangal = Mars and Yaan = Craft.

And about cost many people will think that it's too less,But it's just a satellite compared to mars rover curiosity and Most of cosd difference is due to difference in salary of people working for nasa and for isro. Still it's quite good that we reached in first attempt.

India's space programme has succeeded at the first attempt where others have failed - by sending an operational mission to Mars.
It is, without doubt, a considerable achievement. This is a mission that has been budgeted at 4.5bn rupees ($74m), which, by Western standards, is staggeringly cheap.
The American Maven orbiter that arrived at the Red Planet on Monday is costing almost 10 times as much.
Back in June, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi even quipped that India's real-life Martian adventure was costing less than the make-believe Hollywood film Gravity.

It was a great and happy news that we rarely hear nowadays. I felt really good
hearing that news in the early hour. The fact that they did it with only fraction of
what NASA or some other space agencies from around the world would spend is
astonishing, to say the least. Saw the picture on twitter of the Indian's rocket
Scientists celebrating, seems rare.

Why do these awesome threads have to turn like this? I guess we just aren't civilised enough!

@OP thanks for posting. This is indeed a wonderful achievement. But I guess that once something has been done, we know what to expect and try not to overdesign things. This could be one of the reasons for the relatively cheap mission but would still not be the whole story.
