Hello Everyone,

I have a small confusion on Keyword Research. Whenever I start doing Keyword Research and try to refer different tools like Semrush, Ahrefs, Kwfinder I always see different volumes and Keyword Difficulties in each tool which makes me confused as 1 keyword has 20 difficulty in semrush and same has around 30+ in Ahrefs so I get confused to use it or not on the website/blog. Please tell me best way to come out of this confusion.

Thanks in advance

For vol go with semrush. 30 semrush is medium difficulty and so is 20 ahrefs so what the problem there?

@neoanderson For search volume use Keywords Everywhere, bulk export from SEMRush and into KE (It's a chrome extension, 100K SV for $10).

Keyword difficulty scores are mostly garbage, however, for bulk analysis they are somewhat effective. You should instead filter your lists by keyword length >= 4, this way you'll get mostly long tails that are for the most part not going to be as competitive (you will still have to do competition analysis). If you want to take this a step further, place an additional filter for KW difficulty 20, 10 or less. Whatever you want.

Once you have a filtered list, copy and paste every keyword in google search for manual analysis and look for the following characteristics (in order of difficulty low to high):

1. Easiest: Forum threads, reddit, quora, and any user generated content sites showing up in the top positions targeting or not targeting your keyword.

2. Easy: Weaker sites in top positions. To judge site strength I use the free MOZ DA bar. Look for sites <= DA 30. Yes DA can be manipulated, but in large quantities, it is statistically significant because the majority does not inflate DA with spammy practices.

3. Still Easy: Authority sites appearing in the SERP but are not targeting your keyword, they are there because google has nothing else to show. If they are not satisfying search intent, then you can beat them with some site age and minimal links to your home page (not the page you are trying to rank). You just want some authority going.

For a new site, I wouldn't go beyond these three points. Spend time doing keyword research upfront so you have a content map. Cluster your keywords, which is basically grouping all similar keywords together and then write your content in clusters so you can interlink all related articles with each other and then move on to the next cluster. Write your content for the reader. Cater to the search intent, and fuck everyone else. You want to answer the search query better than your competition.

Good luck!

Thank you very much for clarifying now I can do it more efficiently

Every tool has a unique algorithm, and none of them produce reliable results. They just anticipated a value. So you just use any of the tools. My recommendation is that you just use Semrush.

To answer your question the keyword difficulty is different on every SEO Tool Site because the algorithm for deciding this keyword is different.

I believe the DA is one of the main factors when deciding a difficulty and the DA alone is already very different on every SEO Tool Site. Since the DA is also based on an algorithm which is different for every SEO Tool Site.

So basically the KW difficulty is based on algorithms on top of algorithms and these algorithms are slightly different on every SEO Tool Site.

It seems everything is said.

Tools are third party and it will vary for each and every tools. And also remember it is not accurate.

For keyword research i would suggest to go with semrush value.

There are always discrepancies. But a true test of how difficult a keyword is can be ascertained by two things, your websites performance after going live for the keyword and other websites present on the search result page.

A keyword difficulty of 20 on Semrush and 30 o. Ahrefs aren't very much different. Remember these two use different algos that's why you get difference.

But try to always check the result page to see if there are weak sites occupying spots in page 1(pos 1 to 10), if they occupy a few spots, the. The keyword is definitely not difficult unless of course they're using PBN(which is actually not the case majority of the time).
With regars to volume, you really can't be 100% sure no matter the tool you use. Some keywords that gives me 1k+ volume on tools, end up less than 100 on GSC. And the reverse sometimes turn out to be true.

But most keywords with high search volume, in the several thousand regions, ten to truly have lots of search volume and they also have similar or misspelled variant that would eventually produce the same result.

In summary, I would say don't think it too much, choose one and work with it. When you start getting impressions, you use GSC to get more keywords and optimize your content with it.

OP, you can stick to either Semrush or AHREFS.

I don't think any keyword tool is effective when it comes to keyword difficulty. You will get polar results with this regard. I follow Ahrefs data for volume just so you know.
