Confused with Internet Marketing

I have been on this forum for quite a while and have read a lot about internet marketing over the past year. One month ago I created a website which failed and it was my fault for not doing the keyword research properly. Anyway I managed to rank that keyword but since I got no traffic I let it expire. After doing some keyword research I decided to target a certain niche which had medium competition and have worked quite hard on it ever since. It seems that ranking a site takes forever as I am crawling up the serps slowly and my main keyword has dissapeared from the serps but others are ranking (this could possible be a dance). After all the updates (panda, penguin, etc) I still feel uncertain about being successful with the site. For monetization, there is a clickbank product that is being advertised however if it does not convert there is always the option of using google adsense.

After setting up my site I realized that if I wanted to see some result in IM, it would have to be through paid traffic to offers or through micro niche sites as the wait for ranking a medium competition brand new site could take up to 6 months. I am quite confused and do not want to be one of those that fails at internet marketing. Does anyone have any pointers or would like to be a mentor?

You're on the right track. You're doing the two most important things:
1. Actually taking action - you've got to start somewhere
2. Reading - just from this post I can tell you have a good grasps of the basics and what is needed

IM, and SEO especially, is not an instant money maker. I made something like $1.40 my first month from AdSense lol. Hang in there, keep trying and woking at it. One thing I may recommend is instead of picking a keyword and trying to rank it and then monetize that, which is a great plan but is more of a slower and longer term solution (usually better in the long run but takes longer to get going) it sounds like you're becoming discouraged. You may want to consider instead picking a product (you mentioned clickbank already there's a lot of stuff there) and building a simple landing page (review style is always good for a beginner and many have affiliate sections with templates that look good and convert). Then you can experiment with other traffic sources such as social bookmarking, YT/videos, yahoo answers, posting follow ups in various forums, writing and submitting articles to ezine etc. These are more immediate ways to earn money, after a week plugging away at that and seeing a few comissions in your ClickBank account it may motivate you to keep going.

This is what I recommend for new people, continue to work on your website and ranking it but know it will probably take some time (if the competition is high which it generally will be if the traffic is large and easy to sell to). Spend 50% of your time working on your SEO for your big site and 50% pumping out short term and quick traffic like writing articles and submitting to Ezine, Y! answers, stuff like that to send to some ClickBank landing pages you slap up so that you'll make money while waiting for your SEO efforts to realize themselves.

Thank you for your long and detailed post. You seemed to hit my concern dead on.Yes I hate to admit it but I am slightly discouraged. The way I have always thought of internet marketing was building a site and getting visitors through organic search results which are then monetized. I understand that internet marketing is not for the weak and dedication is the key to success just like any other business.

Ya buddy,

Like I said slap up a quick affiliate page and use immediate traffic methods, even 10 ezine articles with the right keywords will get you sales, and spend a little of your IM time on that while you wait for your SEO efforts to pay off. I guarantee if you see a few commissions and $100+ waiting for you it will keep you from giving up. You ARE on the right track it will just take some more time before you get all the way there, again PM me if you ever need some advice or just wanna chat best of luck bro.
