Confused About VPS Hosting Please Help...

Hi Guys,

I am with hostgator shared hosting for long time. ( some time I am getting CPU resources warning and my sites were down) I think time to move my most of the sites from there.

Few of my sites are getting about total 40k-50k traffic a day. ( total traffic for all site is about this much a day)

I am thinking of getting managed VPS.

I looked around and found following which may be ok for me but I can't decide what to choose.

Hostwinds Plan (1Gb Ram, 25Gb Space, Unlimited bandwidth) with Cpanel and Backup for about $37 a month
Hostwinds Plan (2Gb Ram, 30Gb Space, Unlimited bandwidth) with Cpanel and Backup for about $45 a month

InMotionHosting (1.5 Gb, Burstable upto 4GB, 60GB Space, 2TB bandwidth) with cpanel and backupupto 10gb for about $40 a month for first year then $55 a year

Knownhost (1.5GB RAM, 25GB Space, 5TB Bandwidth) with cpanel and full backup for about $37 a month.
Knownhost (2.5GB RAM, 50GB Space, 6TB Bandwidth) with cpanel and full backup for about $50 a month.

There are few more like above I can't decide which one to go with. ( DreamHost, PoweerUpHosting etc)

InmotionHosting looking good but its bit expensive after a year not sure if its worth this much.

I don't know how much RAM required for my sites for good speed.

I think I need about 30-40GB Space for my sites...

I really want good support also from host.

Can you guys please help.

Because I am not so technical to manage my self servers...

Why not just get a dedicated server?

A lot of those Managed Hosting plans are still shared servers and the support can vary wildly.

I have recently moved some sites from Hostgator Shared Business to their WP Optimized/Managed service and although it is a little faster I think it might have been better to look at dedicated hosting.

Anyway, I hope some more people with experience of managed hosting will be along to help you.

I don't know about dedicated servers.. I didn't look at them.. If they are managed by them and not so expensive I can have a look.. Please suggest.. I feel these servers must be very expensive

If I did not own my own hosting company then I would recommend Power Up Hosting. They have great support and pricing is not bad as well.

you are on the right track but look for vps with SSD drives and raid protection. You should get at minimum 2 gb dedicated ram but better with 3-4 gb ram.

Personally, I like how my VPS's operate. I enjoy Linux because they're cheaper and I know linux/unix. You may want to go with a nice quality vps. Try this https://www.ramnode.com/vps.php

I agree with you in 99.9995% of the posts you make which are always wise, just want to say that before slightly disagreeing with you here.
Managed hosting aren't necessarily shared servers. A VPS has its own ressources pools isolated from others with a custom configuration matching the exact needs of an user. If you meant that VPS is a slice of a dedicated server, then at some extent it is shared. That being said, on most cases these VPS nodes are dedicated you wouldn't consider for your sole usage giving how big they are.
On a shared web hosting, the server configuration has to be optimized to run different types of websites and highly secured.

Managed VPS are indeed excellent for anyone seeking for custom optimization along with excellent performances while not going through the configuration of the VPS.

While i don't have any idea of what type of websites you are running and the traffic they get, i would even recommand you a managed VPS before a dedicated .

Go with a Digital Ocean Droplet and use Serverpilot to make it managable. You would still need a bit of techiness to get things moved and setup the database. But then, things would work like a breeze.

Thanks I looked at Digital Ocean but I don't know how to manage all this and I don't want too much trouble... But I may get something there just for test purpose..

I am leaning more towards Knownhost but lets see.... please keep helping...

if you have ressource problems you should switch to a dedicated server or virtual dedicated server (VDS) instead of VPS.
VPS: you share the ressources -> if someone uses in some way the CPU more then it will influence your system
VDS: the ressources are dedicated only for you -> it won't influence if someone else on that server uses more ressources, that way you remain stable.

SG3101 you have missunderstand the terms VDS and VPS . Actually both VDS and VPS have exactly the same meaning athou VDS is the grandpa term of VPS. Don't worry most of the Asians still use this term nothing wrong with it . You are more or less talking regarding the Virtualization OpenVZ / KVM etc but both are virtualizations for VPS.

@postguru : I would suggest you to take a look on http://www.webuzo.net/hosting/ssd-vps/ actually they are my favorite offshore vps hosting provider . The source you get is fixed dedicated for you and the best part is that you are getting high amount of CPU usage . One, two or four x 3.4Ghz (depending on the plan). The problem with most providers out there (trust me have used lot of them for the past 10 years) are not announcing in public the amount of CPU power you get. They announce the cores (or they may not tell you that).. that is ok but under what speed? 1Ghz? 1.4 Ghz? 2Ghz?? (Believe or not most are providing (allowing) ~1.4 - 2Ghz and like on desktop PC , 3.4Ghz one core is faster than 2x 1.4Ghz ) Nor knownhost, inmotionhosting or hostwinds announce the actual core speeds. KnownHost says that you will get 24+ CPU "shared" Cores , that's cool but on what speed? And since they are shared how you can be sure that you will have them when you need them more when you are under high amount of traffic...).

Another issue with most of the providers are that they don't announce the bandwidth speed you get. All are announcing an great "Unlimited" or some thousands of Terabytes but on what speed? They call it Premium . But for me premium is 200Mbps for you may be 100Mbps but for them 1Mbps? 10Mbps or 100Mbps - Who knows?

Don't take me wrong I'm sure both of them are great providers have never hear any big issues with anyone of them I have actually used both when I had portfolio of 10 websites and was a newbie like you. Hostwinds shared hosting for normal blogs is just #1 . Have friend who is running 3 minecraft servers with knownhost for years now.

Don't be afraid to look on unmanaged plans , In most cases if you have not mess something in the preconfigured settings your VPS will need just an restart . On the so called managed vps hosting you are paying for nothing.. since in case of issue misscofiguration of your script/website they will not fix it for you ! You will get an ticket reply like " We have check your server logs and control panel logs and we cant find any issue , it is most probably caused by your website , please refer to the developer of the script you are using blablabla"). And again with unmanaged hosting if you need help there is always Google and or the community forums of the platform you are using. I guarantee that you will learn to manage your VPS in less than 2 months just with googling .
