What is a Content Locker ? ( for the ones who don't know )

It is any script that blocks the content and forces or 'presents' the visitor with a selection of offers or surveys to complete. Eg: cpa l3ad surveys, adscendmedia surveys, leadbolt etc

Why do I say google hates em? That is because ..

I have been SEOing a website of mine for almost 3 months now. It was going great .. infact it was going so well that I was ranking #2 AND #3 ( same site, different urls ) for the targeted search term. Outranking almost 2million websites.

The url at #2 was the money making page .. so I thought lets try putting cpa l3ad on it and BAM ! 10 hours later I was moved from Page 1 to Page 2 ( rank - #13 ).
So, I figured maybe I'll use the custom content blocking script and put some offers on that and BAM again ! Now, moved to Page 3.

As soon as, I removed the content lockers .. my page started climbing the SERPS and as for my other page ( #3) ..it remained unharmed and climbed to #2 ( because my other page had gone to page 3 ).

So, the moral of the story is .. if you are trying to rank for some competitive keyword .. then DO NOT block the content using such content lockers.

PS - Mods if this post is in the wrong section or has anything against the rules .. Please feel free to remove or edit it! Thanks :)

Its not because of content lockers, its because your bounce rate is so high with them...

That might be true! It does increase the bounce rate a lot. Thanks for the insight xboxps3wow.

Not just google hates content lockers! I hate them! If I see one I will shutdown the browser if necessary just o get away from them. So I could imagine the bounce rate would be bad.

Makes sense indeed. But it's nice to see some real-time evidence so thanks for sharing your experience.

This is true! I had an autoblog with around 60 indexed pages but then I put it the domain to a different use involving a content blocker. 3 months later, the domain is not only sandboxed, but google altogether refuses to index it again lol

Maybe, they found out that it was an autoblog .. google doesn't like autoblogs either.

This may be true all you have to do is not have the content blockers on your main page just your post and you should be good. Google is blocking the pages with the content lockers on them but not on your main page.

that's is not about content blocking, but about cloaking, google see that pages as "showing different content for visitors who click on a search result"

google on past implement a "first click free policy", If you want to lock your content, but want to be on google search results for locked content you must "offer the first visit".

Example, your visitors come from google mus not have a content locker, but if after the visitor is on your site you can block all other pages.

Same experience here. I had a site that was ranking #1 for my search term and two days after I put the BHCB script on the site I dropped to ranking #143! I took it off and I am slowly starting to rise again.

Sucks though, I was getting awesome traffic. I won't use BHCB ever again!

Block just a part of content and set robots to do nofollow...
    This will cover your ass...

If you didn't notice yet .. they are redirecting the visitor to another domain where one has to fill out the survey. So, they don't have the content locker on their website itself.
