Hello everyone,
I've been researching pay-per-install models and wanted to learn more about the current methods being used. I would greatly appreciate hearing actual experiences or thoughts from those who are familiar with it, as there seems to be a lot of conflicting information.
 
Totally get where you're coming from about the conflicting info with ppi models, it's such a chaotic space with so many different methods floating around. I'm also really interested to hear what strategies are actually scoring genuine installs versus just getting caught up in all the noise and fake traffic.
 
Navigating pay-per-install (PPI) models can feel like a minefield because the landscape is sharply divided between traditional desktop bundling (which is heavily plagued by low-quality software and security flags) and modern mobile user acquisition (UA).
The current industry standard has shifted from raw Cost-Per-Install (CPI) to a hybrid Cost-Per-Action (CPA) or "Optimized CPI" model. In today's privacy-first environment, driven by AI-powered ad networks, driving a blind download is no longer enough. Advertisers frequently face attribution fraud or users who download an app and abandon it on day zero.

My Recommendation
If you are looking to implement or utilize a PPI model successfully, do not pay for raw installs alone.
Instead, tie your payouts to a down-funnel event. Structure your campaigns so that a payout is only triggered when a user completes a high-value action within the app, such as:
* Creating an account
* Passing a specific tutorial level
* Completing a free trial signup
This completely shifts the risk away from you, filters out bot networks, and ensures you are paying for genuine, engaged users rather than empty metrics.
 
Building on what's already been said about tying payouts to down-funnel events — for networks that actually run on this kind of CPA/PPI hybrid model, worth checking CPAGrip, OGAds, and CPAlead. All three let you structure offers around an action (signup, trial, etc.) rather than a raw install, which lines up with the fraud-filtering approach mentioned above.


CPAGrip and OGAds both have a good mix of mobile/PPI-style offers with relatively easy approval for newer publishers. CPAlead's been around longer and has broader offer variety if you want to diversify beyond just install-based campaigns.

@Afeez Animator are you looking at desktop ppi or mobile? because those are two completely different worlds. @Pandora92 is right about the mobile side shifting to down-funnel cpa, but if you are talking about the classic desktop ppi... like bundling or browser extensions, that setup is a massive headache now.

i tried running some desktop installs late last year and windows defender basically kills 90% of your traffic before the installer even runs. if you still want to go the desktop route you need some serious budget for custom code signing certificates and crypters, otherwise you are just wasting time. for mobile, content locking with ogads or running search arbitrage to apk downloads is probably the easiest way to start without getting buried in fraud.
 
Desktop PPI is mostly cooked unless the app is actually clean and has a real reason to be installed. The old “push installer everywhere and pray” stuff just gets flagged, refunds, bans, chargebacks... not worth the headache imo. Mobile is where most ppl still make it work, but yeah it’s more like CPI that quietly becomes CPA after testing, because advertisers watch day 1/day 7 retention hard now. If your traffic can’t produce opens, signup or some in-app event, raw installs alone won’t last long on any decent network.
 
Mobile is still workable, but only if you treat it like retention traffic from day one. A lot of new guys get excited seeing cheap installs, then 2 weeks later network scrubs half of it because users never opened again or country/device mix looks weird. Desktop... yeah unless it’s a real clean utility with proper signing and no shady bundle tricks, I wouldn’t even bother now. Best thing is run tiny tests per source, watch EPC after scrub not just dashboard numbers, and don’t trust any source that can’t explain where the installs are actually coming from.
